oh you dont play the 2 necks at the same time. the top one is a twelve-string so it has a very different effect and works well for some parts of the song. the bottom neck is a standard 6 string and is usually used to get the dirtier song for soloing and such. its just an alternative to switching guitars midway through the song or concert.

You left out the Who?

And I'll go to bat for Southern Rock (aka Roots Rock)...

Lynyrd Skynyrd had some great tunes but I think that if you're picking a representative for Southern Rock I think you should look at The Allman Brothers. AB's body of work is just awesome and they drove the popularity of Southern Rock into the mainstream.

Before the Allman Brothers broke onto the scene music had greatly ignored a lot roots rock or southern rock bands. Woodstock helped. Other great Southern Rock and Roots Rock bands over the years (somewhat in chronological order to the best of my knowledge):

The James Gang, CCR/John Fogerty, Marshal Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels Band, The Doobie Brothers, , The Outlaws, Blackfoot, .38 Special, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, ZZ Top, George Thorogood and the Deleware Destroyers, Georgia Satellites, and the Black Crowes

Also, it should be noted that Southern Rock influenced a tone of "international bands" that easily share space on the jukebox with Southern Rock. In fact I'll bet Bubba would get into a bar fight if you tried to tell him that any of these bands weren't from the south: Foghat (UK), Bad Company (UK), The Band (Canada), Grand Funk Railroad (Michigan), ACDC (Australia), Aerosmith (Boston).

ACDC's Bon Scott was a huge Southern Rock fan that he wore confederate/rebel flag shirts.
