Can't install help please

Unread postby Edwardas 3 » 07 Aug 2011, 21:23

I dunno what I'm doing wrong.
I have 7 64 bit Windows .
I have put all 8 Win RAR archive files into Update folder in HoMM 3 Complete Edition .
But Installer says that it can not find any *wog install files in that Update folder.
I had woG on Win 98 system before .

There is no update folder in HoMM complete or SOD. Specify your game path, should look probably as:

C:\Program Files\3DO\Heroes 3

It will install WoG, that's all.

I'm trying to get this work through Wine, and it's oddly not working. If I just extract things and run H3WOG.exe, it says that files are missing (although they can't be, because I just installed it), and if I run H3WUPD.EXE (which is terrible), it somehow assumes that H3 is installed into My Documents and not where it is actually installed and won't let me input the correct path...

No idea yet. Just in phase one - downloaded. I will kindly inform you when I advance, it will require some time though. ;)

I have Win7 Pro 64bits, so I kinda assume that it will work for the first try.

I don't get why you have such problems, Emerald. ERA is a self install. You select game path, and it does all the work. Don't do anything else, as unpacking it, drag files, replace or whatever.

Like I said, a window saying "Files are missing, please reinstall Heroes 3!" or something of the sort pops out and the game closes. It does that if I try to run working WOG off a Windows install, too. I thought it could be a registry issue, but apparently installing H3Complete didn't fix it.

@GreatEmerald. Are you running OpenSUSE? I noticed that WINE asumes that the game is installed to documents folder, because WINEPREFIX environment variable isn't set by default.

try creating file named HoMM3.desktop in /home/YourUsername/Desktop with these contents:

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Comment[lt]=
Comment=
Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/YourUsername/.wine" wine C:\\\\path\\\\to\\\\the\\\\game.exe
GenericName[lt]=
GenericName=
Icon=
MimeType=
Name[lt]=HoMM III
Name=HoMM III
Path=/home/YourUsername/.wine/dosdevices/c:/path/to/the/
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
TerminalOptions=
Type=Application
X-DBUS-ServiceName=
X-DBUS-StartupType=
X-KDE-SubstituteUID=false
X-KDE-Username=

Ah, I see, thanks. And yes, I'm using openSUSE.

Now the game launches, but crashes immediately after that:

Seems like it crashed while calculating the value that has to be written to registry. Check if registry entries are in your registry and if not, create them manually.

Everything seems to be there:

Unless this again has something to do with the prefixes...

Try changing 'First Time' and 'Main Game Full Screen' to 0

Now it says it can't find zmainmen.pcx and a few other bitmaps...

I guess it's because in executable the file name is written Zmainmen.pcx and in lod it's ZMAINMEN.pcx. Try renaming the files so that their names are written in the same case.

Could be, but I can't do that. MMArchive doesn't work correctly (crashes while trying to open LODs) and LODExtract doesn't list the commands for it. The PCX file itself is not in the Data directory.

Also noticed that the WOG main menu music is in Mp3 instead of being in MP3. :\

download and compile binary editor. http://bedlinux.tripod.com/, open the LOD with it (run it from terminal with filename of LOD as a parameter) and rename all entries in table of contents.
