I don't think I want to back up and read all of this.

My Dell Dimension 8100 has DR RAM... that's why it would be cheaper to replace the whole computer than to upgrade the RAM.

I'm seriously considering a new computer. I need this one at work. It's good enough for processing pictures for a shop catalog. I need a new one at home to play games.... (like H5)

RAM sells fairly well on eBay, even old chips.

I would not suggest to buy any hardware on ebay (and similar sites). Its like playing roulette

Yeah, and chips are pretty cheap on ordinary hardware sites anyway.

Recent chips yes, but the poor souls who are stuck with old Rambus motherboards don't have as many options.

Ain't that the truth? :S In 1999, this computer was top of the line! A real hum-dinger! It even came with Windows Millennium Edition Pro installed. Whoo Hoo! Cost me $2,000! It was so fast my computer jockey friends came over to play on my new 'Maserati' of a computer.

Now... they come over and ask "You've still got that thing?" :cry:

A good way to save money on PC is to keep from buying top hardware. Top hardware products are allways overpriced relatively to productivity. For example if some top procesor costs 400$ - it does not mean that it is twice as powerfull as procesor that costs 200$.
So if you have 2000$ to spend on PC, better buy one for 1000$ and do two upgrades with one or two years period for 500$ each.

I go down the path of spending on a complete upgrade every 4 years or so, spend somewhere in the order of 1500 or so .... single biggest purchase is the video card (I try to get something one rung below the top bracket), then get a very good mobo, good RAM, decent cpu, and average spec HD, burner, etc .... works pretty well for me, I'm probably half-way thru an upgrade cycle and using an Athlon 3500+, on an ASUS mobo, 1 GB Corsair RAM, 256MB X850XT vid card, 200GB HD .... so it does alright

Found a use for them, btw... this old computer at school (the one I'm using right now) has two slots, each occupied by 256mb chips. Can't hurt to double that :)

I wouldn't imagine so, now you have 2 256MB RAM chips to get rid of though :D

Yeah, well, at least the guys at school get a faster computer. We only have three fairly new ones; the others are so old I think they're actually running 64mb RAM... Well, we have our own, of course, and we mostly use those anyway.

that's the best way, schools are notorious for slow old computers, our uni wan't bad, but hardly cutting edge, except for the sys admin's systems of course
