It's probably because the mouse just goes out of the game instead of colliding to the side. Google for a mouse-trapper. It's a tool some gamers use to keep their mouse in the game. Which can be very handy when you're using a dual monitor setup.

You could of course read a walkthrough and or just look at the revealed minimap which comes with it. Reloading just for scouting seems rather time consuming to me.

This,

Tribes of the east will load without homm 5 (because it's a stand alone) but it does not have the campaigns. They can be downloaded as a mod though.

A 4 for stronghold's endgame seems rather exaggerated. They can't do anything against dark magic. (Nothing big anyway)

Also I'm curiuous what make you think necropolis' midgame is so weak.
