Ran into the most Ridiculous Problem in H3 history

Unread postby cjleeagain » 07 Aug 2021, 12:49

Heroes 3 is such an awesome game, that I keep finding new things about this game, more than 22 years after it was first published!

Today I crashed into the most ridiculous problem in my history of H3 gaming.

I'm playing The Walking Dead by Maygwan. He's an incredible mapmaker.

The version I'm playing is his older version that he uploaded to Maps4Heroes in 2020. He's got a new 'Director's Cut' version, although the minimap looks totally different.

I just posted this on maps4heroes...
https://www.maps4heroes.com/forum/opini ... 890&game=3

I'm now about 10+ weeks/ 3months 3rd week into the game after restarting twice. It's a very slow game given the number of heroes, the complexity of the map, and the many different tough battles.

I have all my heroes and appear to be doing fine. But because I now have Maggie, Rozita and Ezekiel in the Alexandria area, I was able to combine armies and deliver several punishing blows to my enemies, killing many of their heroes. And I'm stuck with the most insane problem in H3 history. My backpacks are full!

I have no idea when my other heroes will be able to make it to the center/ Alexandria area. If I spread out the (worthless) loot to the other heroes, this is still manageable. But if Maygwan's map plans for the central heroes to pick up important artifacts at some point in the near future, I'm screwed. Because I can't swap around my artifacts thanks to a full backpack!

Has anyone else played this map before? Will my towns build a tavern in the future? Will I get more heroes? Or am I stuck? This map takes such a long time that I really don't want to replay it just because of something as nuts as a full backpack.

So... anybody has any solution to the problem of an overcrowded backpack? (I've combined some artifacts to make space, but problem is now I dare not fight any more battles for fear of picking up more useless artifacts!)

Having full backpack is more common problem, that you would thought. On rich maps you will get here, more often than not. There are solutions ofc, which falls to two ways:

#1 - Hire more heroes to use them also as "supportive bearers"
#2 - Discard artifacts, when you can be sure that they are useless.

There's also self solution #3, which no one likes to follow. Loose you hero, so this burden will become problem of AI.

Only the best artifacts win the battles.
Money and sheer numbers are decisive.
Concetrate on off-balance breakers, to secure advantage.

Pol, I am an experienced player, so I did have the problem of a full backpack multiple times before. But every single time was on a big map where you could hire other heroes. On one such ultra rich map, I hired at least 20 useless heroes (and garrisoned them) so that everyone could have their own golden goose or cornucopia or statue of Legion. Usually I would get rid of all useless artifacts long before setting out into enemy territory, because you never know what you can pick up after a battle. Sometimes you get to assemble combo artifacts after a fight.

Heroes 3 doesn't have cursed artifacts, but in H2 we used to hire expendable heroes and dump all the Fizbins of Misfortune on them.

This is the first time I'm playing on a map where you can't hire other heroes, where your heroes are all separated, and not likely to meet up for at least months.

So it's not a Bug. But it's still a problem that popped up because the very experienced and skilled mapmaker didn't think about this problem.

Moreover on this map, combo artifacts are important. I'm gathering pieces of the angelic alliance on different heroes now, so I can see where this is going. There are already important battles where the use of Ogre's Ironfist, Admiral's Hat, Wizard's Well are crucial.

Maygwan's solution is... to wait until my other heroes show up. His indirect solution is to come up with a newer version of his map where the fights are tougher in the center, so that I can't leave, or maybe I would have to scamper around avoiding too-powerful enemies. That way I won't go campaigning and overload my backpack.

I'm now facing the choice of either ending this map to play his latest version, or replaying at a much earlier savegame where I hadn't killed too many enemy heroes... I hate the sight of enemies marching around, but actually being AI morons (and literally legions of zombies), not all of them cause me that much problem and my heroes can outrun them (of course, this map is The Walking Dead after all).

Though it may spoil your fan, you can check map in map editor or, even better/worse, use cheats to see.

Everything above that is in hands of Fortune or mapmaker ;)
