ok who is the true computer RPG champion :)

Unread postby myythryyn » 08 Dec 2006, 02:18

i just found this neat posting on wikepedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology ... games#2000

ahhh the memories :) the golden age of the computer RPG surely was the early and mid nineties. so many good games.
as far as i can tell, the list is fairly complete, though i had to edit and add a couple entries myself, if anyone notices a game missing, go ahead and add it, may as well make that list complete.

so, just who is the computer RPG champion ??

going through the list, i have played 38 of those games.

ill admit, a couple, not many, i played and didnt finish, but i would say for sure i played to completion at least 33-36 of them. i rarely dont finish a game unless its a horrible game.
like MMIX did i not count....i think i played it for a fifteen, twenty minutes top then threw the game in my closet till it went in the garbage.
and the online games you cant really consider "completing", but the ones i counted i played alot of.
and thats not counting the console RPG's ive played like dragon warrior, or the early final fantasy :)

what is your total of games youve played on the list?

some highlights - Betrayal at Krondor ... excellent, excellent game, Ultima Underworld .... a real eye-opener, Diablo of course and way back to Eye of the Beholder - some good memories to be sure!

Im rather young, and played only 16 of them. But what I found weird is that jagged alliance is there and x-com is not. Also, theres no mentioning of avernum. And I thing SF should be there as well, and so should titans quest. Also, what about console RPGs that were translated to PC?Eg,zelda and phantasy star?

Look for it under its original title, Exile.

Most (if not all) of the Japanese RPG is missing from the list. Like:

FF series (only XI was there...)
Suikoden series
Xenosaga
Chrono Trigger (Classic!!!!)
Chrono Cross
Breath of Five Series (The fifth installment is exceptionally classy, one of the best RPG ever written, style and story wise)
Dragon Quest

How about Metal Gear Series (King of Action RPG)

Bow down to the Champion. My total is 63. This includes all of the first 10, up to 1982.

Some not listed that I have also played:

Buck Rogers- countdown to Doomsday
Fountain of Dreams
Dragon Wars
Magic Candle
Return to Krondor
Champions of Krynn
Death Knights of Krynn
Demon's Winter
Escape from Hell
Phantasie 1, 2, 3

63?? Caradoc, how did you ever find time to eat :)
how many games are listed, you musta played almost every one, no doubt a high percentage of them.

i bow down to our champion :hail: (and id be suprised if anyone can beat you)

well im impressed, you far surpassed me....
i guess ill have to accept my second place spot so far:)
unless someone takes it....
then we have DaemianLucifer, 20 and stefan.urlus at 13.
anyone else want to give us their totals?

also they did list the buck rogers game(1990), i was surpised since it is an obscure game, but i do remember having fun playing it.
and your right, they missed some of the Krynn SSI games.

the list is "north americacentric" so i guess none of the japanese rpg's were mentioned, maybe you should edit them in :)
but i think most of your titles are console games, like chronotrigger and dragonquest, xenosauga, and suikoden were all console.

it is supposed to be a "computer" rpg list, so im sure thats why all the console RPG's were missed. i know ive played alot of those too.

well, if you're gonna list your own titles then I guess most peoples numbers will inflate a bit ... and is it just PC games? or RPG all told, cause that adds BG: DA and a host of others as well .....

well the webpage isnt a definitive list, and this is just for fun anyways.

i think its best if we just add up what computer RPG games weve played from that list, which is what i did for my total. i didnt add any games not werent listed.

im pretty sure that all the "major" computer, not console, rpg's are listed there. if they have missed a big title, then we can add it.

i think its kinda interesting to hear how many and which computer rpg games people have played. i actually thought i might be the champion :D
i never expected a total of 63!!
can anyone come close to that?

the younger people who in a sense, should get bonus points if they play an older game since they had to go lookign for it, and are somewhat at a disadvantage.
some of the older games probably would take some effort to get a copy, and then youd have to install some DOS emulator on your computer to play them.

while older people like me and caradoc (who must be pretty old too :D )
have an advantage in that we were there when the games were released so we had a chance to play them all, while other people havnt.

@Caradoc, Return to Krondor was listed.

I just remembered another series, Summoner I & II

As I see it, the list on the page is heavily D&D oriented.

And for the record I have played about 15 of them, although I think I have only complete (as in see the ending) a few: Planescape, fallout I&II, BG, Diablo I&II, KOTOR. I also don't do MMOG so less points for me there. :P

I played about 25 of them. A few Ultimas are missing -- I'll update the list during the week-end.

I count 42. And there's many I've played that are NOT on there!

and that is pertinent, cause a lot of these RPG's required significant time investment, they weren't quick games by any means .... I remember playing Eye of the Beholder for a long time, the BG's are hardly short and Ultime Underworld .... well

and that also means that a lot of people don't actually finish the game, which is a shame

looks like i lost second place, and and am now third place :hoo:

i can definetely say that ive finished the majority of the games ive started. once i get hooked onto a game, there is no stopping, ive got to see what happens :D .

plus back then, when i would buy an RPG it would be THE game that i am playing at the time, and i would totally focus on it.

not like nowaways, where ive got multiple games going on at the same time, online, stradegy, RPG, whatever.
so im more guilty of not finishing games now...

I wish I had the time for that sort of thing .... I'd be lucky to get maybe 4 or 5 hours of gametime in a week

i may have more than one game going at once these days, but it doestn mean i play them all every week :)
like oblivian, ive had it for months now, i just never play it often anymore, i have a feeling its going to end up unfinished.
it just seems after you get to a certain point in the game, it looses its interest....

plus, where as some people sit in front of the TV all night, or for a couple hours, i sit in front of the computer instead....i dont even have cable, i used to pay for it, then realised i have more fun playing RPG games than the crap thats on these days ;|
