JVC hired by EA to lead Command and Conquer brand

Unread postby cuc » 18 Nov 2009, 04:22

The game industry site Gamasutra has obtained an EA internal memo. Among other things, it confirms Jon Van Caneghem is... what?! Hired to lead the development of Command and Conquer?

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/2612 ... m_Hire.php

It almost sounds like April Fools' news, but is undeniably true.

That's odd, especially seeing how C&C4 is shaping up...

Guy's gotta make a living, I suppose. Or at the very least finance his racing.

It sounds to me like they hired JVC for his project management skills and experience in making games. How is that "selling out" to EA? They're paying him to do what he does.

Or EA is trying buy Ubisoft again and promised JVC that he will be responsible for MM franchise development? :D

Well, this rank is disputable since Kottick became ActiBlizz's CEO and started his price changes, etc.

When you think of it, having to have to sell or give up your own franchise isn't any better than working for EA.

Ummm, yes, you do. EA has basically said to JVC, "Please come work for us and help us suck less." That's a good thing last I checked, both for EA and its customers. If anything, you should be happy that a guy with a proven track record is getting on the inside of a company you don't like. One doesn't hire a guy with JVC's experience just to crush him and rebuild him as a corporate droid. That's what entry-level college hires are for. :-D

We can't be sure, but I guess he makes his living with
this way, that's his job after all. I just hope that the
Might and Magic flame still burns inside and will grab
some opportunity in there and resurrect the series. ;)

How can JVC resurrect the MaM series when the rights are in Ubisoft's hands?

Hopefully, while at his desk he pops in a HoMM game to pass the time at EA meetings.

With the same way Ubi used when copyrights where to 3dO/nwc? EA could
buy them. Or with just changing a little the name if they are not
willing to pay, like "with Might + Magic" , the "with could
be tiny...hehe

They are many ways, but...nah...the possibilities are really low,
just dreams :P

ya know, he could have gone to Ubisoft and regained access to his own series instead of EA.

you some kind of EA mole or something? EA will do the same to him as they did to others, place him in some Need for Speed project or some shitty MMO/Sims game.

Going to work for Ubisoft or Nival would be selling out IMHO. They've made it clear that they are now the owners of the Might and Magic brand and they are going to take it in a different direction. JVC would be forced to step in line or step out.

The article said he was hired to lead the Command & Conquer brand. He's going to work on another series with a long history and large fan base. And this time the publisher might actually have enough money to pay its people.

BTW, I don't work for EA. I don't really have any reason to like or dislike them.

Working for another series that's been taken over by people that miss the point is still kinda the same thing.

They did it to Steve Barcia. I don't see why they wouldn't to him.
