Heroes V 1.1 Reviewed

The review of Heroes of Might and Magic V at GamePro is very short, but it takes into account the 1.1 update that Ubisoft released several weeks ago. The final score of 4.25 out of 5 is also slightly higher than the current review average so far. The author highlights a couple of concerns that fans currently have:

"The lack of non-campaign mission maps is similarly frustrating: for a franchise that has long given its fans a wealth of replayability via standalone maps and a do-it-yourself editor, the reliance on well-executed but still stingy multiplayer features to provide replayability just feels cheap. Maybe we'll need another patch for that."

As usual, the graphics get a lot of praises. The sometimes frustrating camera is seen as the price to pay for a beautiful and immersive environment:

"But it doesn't look like a traditional HOMM game and I mean that in a good way. No, in a very good way. The 2D rendered maps and units of yesteryear have been booted in favor of a glittering 3D game engine that creates a simply gorgeous gameworld and injects the chessboard-style battles with new life. While the exploratory nature of the gameplay encourages you to reveal the map in order to grab more resources and snag more goodies, the beauty of the game prods you along as well if only to uncover the next beautiful swath of landscape."

Does anyone have the latest issue of PC Gamer? I heard they gave the game a score of 74.0%. Can you confirm this, and possibly include a quote or two?
I'm on Steam and Xbox Live.

*sigh* I'm left wondering if these reviewers actually play games. :disagree:

It's too bad they couldn't review Heroes V 1.2

You know, the patch that was supposed to be released 2 weeks ago.

How the hell can a patch be so late? If you don't get everything done, you just postpone some fixes till the next patch.

I'm afraid what this means is that there are serious problems with the editor, since that is the only must-have in the release.

Kristo: What is it you disagree about in that chunk of text? He just says that you reveal the map to get more resources.

Perhaps I trimmed too much of his quote. My point was that he seemed so enamored with the pretty pictures that he missed how annoying the interface is. Review after review comes down the pike with this same attitude.

I'll cut off my ranting there, as this horse is dead, beaten, dismembered, and eradicated.

Hmmm, I think there may be a typo -

If you still have love for the HOMM franchise after the colossal bellyflop of HOMM III

As usual, the logic of the review is that 3D is necessarily better than 2D. After all, to make his point about *why* the landscape is more beautiful than previous incarnations, all he has to do is remind his readers that those were "2D."

I personally find the Heroes III maps much more aesthetically pleasing than the H5 lanscape, which looks like every other Warcraft-type environment....

Some of the trees are so big and tall that they can literally cover your whole camera and block the entire screen from being viewed haha.

I agree that the camera gets really annoying sometimes, especially in the underground. Most of the time I have to look right above my hero to be able to move him/her.

Also, does any of you have completely level camera view (i.e. as if one is standing right behind a character)? I ahve seen some screenshots where the camera was level with the ground but I can only go as far as the head level of creatures.
