Summary of an entry on the Ancients from a Might and Magic Lore Bible I'm working on. Everything here has been thoroughly researched.

Ancients

The Ancients are an extremely advanced race of humanoid beings that many millennia ago began to seed the stars of the Void with their own people, embarking on a mass colonization effort. Their highly sophisticated science, technology, and magic, all one in the same thing, was developed far beyond the comprehension of any other form of life in the Universe. Many technological accomplishments were made by the Ancients, including the development of a super-lightspeed method of interstellar communication, called the Wire, highly advanced androids who piloted their Generation Ships, and became Guardians of the worlds they seeded, the CRON and VARN vessels, which were stacked into nacelles upon transport between worlds, the Web of Worlds, which connects biospheres together in different sections of the galaxies from the hubs of Web Stations, powerful energy weapons, such as the blaster, blaster rifle, and the staff of blue light, and many, many more Godlike achievements. To this day, we do not know why they sent us here, why they left us, or if they’ll ever return.

The Ancients, as well as the Creators, were the inner joke of NWC. Both these factions impersonate the NWC itself. The Creators are the dark side of the NWC that creates the challenge for the player, while the Ancients are the light side that rewards the winner.
