Tips
Located lower on the food-chain than most level 1 creatures, Gremlins lack real usefulness. They are often too slow to react quickly, and low stats limit their ability to perform very well.
Unlike regular Gremlins, Master Gremlins are extremely valuable. They are the only ranged 1st level unit in a town, and many heroes start out with good amount of Gremlins ready to be upgraded. Master Gremlins have significantly better stats, which helps them when the enemy gets too close for comfort.

Tips
Exceptional creatures, Gargoyles sport an even set of stats and good Health. They can also resist many enemies' special abilties because of their Elemental qualities.
Obsidian Gargoyles, pardon the pun, have solid stats. Slightly more Attack and Defense allows them to fight much better against stronger foes, while much higher Speed allows them to get to ranged enemies faster. When it comes down to it, Obsidian Gargoyles can sually go toe-to-toe very well with other low level units.

Stone Golems are very economic for a level 3 creature. They are the cheapest 3rd level unit, but not the weakest - by far. Very high Defense lets the Stone Golem tank for a long time or protect allied ranged units. Unfortunately, they are very slow.
Some extra Speed and a good boost of Attack make the already deadly Stone Golems even more dangerous. They have more Health to last longer in battle, but still cannot travel very far. Still, enemy magic-users will have a blast trying to destroy them.

Tips
Mages have surprisingly good abilities: high Attack, decent Defense, and good Damage. The only weakness they possess is low Health, which can be expected. They put their good Damage to use when enemies get into melee range, for they have no melee penalty when striking at close-range.
Archmages are a significant upgrade; all the Mage stats increase slightly, and the Speed is what they need most. The cost for an Archmage joins the stats as an increase, but its not slight, so be wary.

Tips
Genies have even Defense and Attack, and some exceptional Speed gives them a good bit of worth for front-line fighting. Be careful of their somewhat low Health - you should save them as best you can for their upgrade whe it comes.
Master Genies get a useful feat that Ogre Mages receive as well when they upgrade - the option of going out and fighting, or staying back and buffing the team. This is extremely helpful in any battle, more than it helps the Ogre Mages, because Master Genies match Thunderbirds for Speed and can fly as well. A good strategy to use is have one main stack of Master Genies for fighting, and one or two extra single units for buffing allies. Overall; a damn good unit. Great choice for a favorite, Sir Charles.

Tips
Nagas have good Attack and low Defense, this makes them good at duking it out with weaker opponents in large numbers. Getting the first shot on enemies is easy with their No Retaliation ability.
Very high Damage and very high Cost make buying Naga Queens somewhat of a double-edged sword, but they are very fierce combatants - they do massive damage on every strike. Naga Queens are very good melee units overall.

Immune to all Mind Spells - Ranged - No Melee Penalty - 150% damage against Black Dragons

Tips
Giants are a relatively weak level 7 creature, with generally better Attack and lower Defense. They do amazing damage though, better than any other unit in the game. Low Health and slow Speed make them hard to effectively melee with, so instead, protect important ranged allies like Mages or Master Gremlins.
Titans can inflict the best damage in the whole game.....from the other side of the battlefield. Your almighty Titans will be targeted for their amazing potential, but great Health and good Attack and Defense skills will protect them. If an enemy gets too close, Titans can still do massive damage because of No Melee Penalty. Have fun.

No Melee Penalty - Thunderclap: Deals an extra 10 damage, per Lord of Thunder, to the target of a Lord of Thunder melee attack - Ranged - Double Shot - Immune to all Mind Spells - Immune to Fear - Air Shield
1 per week
Tips
The Lord of Thunder fights equally well at long range or melee. Thunderclap adds damage to its normal melee attack (which has no penalty), and it shoots twice in a row for maximum ranged potential. Lords of Thunder have high health and above-average stats. Because the Lord of Thunder is the definition of versatility, you can move them forward to stop approaching enemies AND shorten the range at which they fire their ranged attack, resulting in extra damage. (Note that the Lord of Thunder is only available in the Wake of Gods add-on to Heroes III)
