1) At the time of the Nekross undead uprising, the Archeon forces had just emerged. Little was known about them yet.
2) As they proved in Heroes 4, Kreegans don't play well with others.
3) According to M&M7, the Kreegans backstabbed the Nighon Warlocks, and they are not likely to forgive them.
4) Traveling from Nekross to the Archeons would take them straight through the most fierce warzones of Axeoth (I should get out the map at some point).
5) There wasn't much time to decide once the undead started their massacre. They had to get out through the path of least resistance (=North, since those lands are the most empty).
