John Romero on Might and Magic

Unread postby Angelspit » 26 Aug 2013, 16:16

John Romero (not to be confused with Paul, the composer) is a legend, and a rather controversial figure, of the gaming industry. He is responsible for classics such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake. But according to a post on the Might and Magic X developer blog, he was also involved in the Commodore 64 version of Might & Magic 2 (we do learn something new every day!):

"In 1988 I co-founded a company named Inside Out Software. Our first project was to port Might & Magic II from the Apple II (double-res) to the PC and Commodore C64. I did the C64 port straight from Jon Van Caneghem's 6502 assembler source."

He has some good words for the series as a whole, and the people behind them:

"What a game series, eh? Still surviving since the early misty days when Wizardry and Ultima ruled the world, there was still some space for another peer to rise to prominence and cement its place in history. Jon Van Caneghem and Mark Caldwell deserve high honors for their efforts."

Also on the Dev Blog are <a href="https://mightandmagicx-legacy.ubi.com/o ... 00004>some pictures from Gamescom.

Huh, so the Apple II was the original version after all. That's interesting, because it also had some bugs that were fixed in the DOS version. And the DOS versions of Secret of the Inner Sanctum and Gates to Another World integrate very well with each other, so they did a pretty nice job there.
