No DRM For H6, Conflux Explained

Unread postby Kalah » 09 Aug 2011, 18:31

<img src="http://support.uk.ubi.com/online-servic ... t_logo.jpg" align=right hspace=10 vspace=10>Ever since Ubisoft announced their <a href="http://support.uk.ubi.com/online-servic ... m/">online DRM policy</a>, requiring players of Ubisoft PC games to stay connected to the Internet while playing, the community of gamers have protested to the scheme. When the policy was first announced back in February 2010, Celestial Heavens issued <a href="https://www.celestialheavens.com/newsar ... arch">this statement</a>, explaining our views on the matter, and predicting that the policy would do more harm than good. We were right. Rife with problems Ubisoft initially claimed would be minimal, the policy ... well, there's really no other word for it: it <i>failed</i>.

<p>Earlier this year, Ubisoft started to <a href="https://www.celestialheavens.com/newsar ... arch">cool off</a> on the policy, but still, some elements of the company claim that the measure <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/07/28/ubiso ... ccess">has been successful</a>. That could just be the final statement to save face before taking another step away from it all - we just don't know ... by any account, it doesn't make sense.

<p>Might and Might Community Developer Irina Kassina has <a href="http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/ ... nfirmed</a>, however, that there will be no online DRM used in <i>Might and Magic: Heroes VI</i>. Indeed, it has also been confirmed that there will be <i>no copy protection at all</i>. It seems that instead, Ubi have gone all <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic_C ... tardock</a> and settled for at special bonus program available for online players. It is called the <b><a href="http://might-and-magic.ubi.com/heroes-6 ... LUX</a></b>.

<p><img src="https://www.celestialheavens.com/images ... onflux.jpg" align=right hspace=10 vspace=10>The Conflux is basically a set of online features - which means that they will motivate players to go online, but playing offline will also be possible. This is a good thing, with Ubisoft's track record in supporting online features. As for the contents, it is all explained in these three videos:

<ul><li><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuSLkFdD4YU">Conflux part I</a></li>

<li><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vitze_PNFQM">Conflux part II</a></li>

<li><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjnOUKLQVic">Conflux part III</a></li></ul>

Good news everyone! Though, is there a possibility for a written précis of the videos? You know, without the *cough* accent *cough*

Yes, good news. It just didn't make sense taking Heroes into this new online policy all of a sudden. The idea is to embrace all potential players, not to cut them off from your planning - I mean a part of them.

"introdoction for conflox" What's wrong with her? :|

Woohoo, awesome news! More companies realising that DRM is stupid! :applause: I hope that in a few years we will be able to look back and laugh at how someone ever thought DRM was a good idea to begin with.

As for Irina, it makes me wonder if she isn't the only developer, given that we rarely ever hear about anyone else :D

Perhaps she's the best English speaker of them. The next one might speak like this. :shh: Don't even need to mention that this guy has gone over all the media due his outstanding English.

Oh, and he gave anotherinterview...I still prefer Irina. :D

Also, viewed the videos, and the Conflux strikes me as a carbon copy of Impulse::Reactor. I mean, almost down to the graphical design. Everything I::R offered (except for logging in with OpenID, matchmaking and addon downloads) is in there.

Also, wee, the Win Scenario music remix in the 2nd video! Sounds less cheery and probably closer to the original in HoMM2, I guess.

Oh, and try transcribing the audio, and death from laughter is guaranteed!

Saudi-Africa? He be awesome at geography as well :D

Still, if there truly is no DRM, I'll buy HoMM VI for sure, to show my support for the policy.

No DRM will raise the chance that H6 could be played with wine. Would be nice if one does not need to boot into Windows to play H6.

This is fantastic news.

The conflux seems really good. Looks like it'll add a layer of depth to the game while also making the game much better for online play.

I hate having the commercials at the beginning (I know you can abort them) and then the lengthy trademarking. Consequently I haven't seen them, but I am interested. I would like to read what the conflux videos said.

Jeff you lazy boy. Here's me doing the work for you. Next time just watch the subtitles with the sound off. :P

Video 1: "Hello, heroes! Welcome to the video introduction to the Conflux. M&M Heroes VI is fully playable offline but you can extend your gaming experience by connecting to your Uplay account and using extra online features. That’s what we call the Conflux and we’ll now see how it works. The Conflux has been designed to be integrated directly into the game mechanics and gameplay. Always present and discreet, you can access its features easily at any time through the interface. Let’s discover the main menu and what bonuses are included in the Conflux. The Conflux taskbar is always visible on the main menu of the game, but once you are playing, you must click on the Conflux taskbar button located in the upper right-hand corner to access these features. If you are connected to the Conflux, this button will be blue. On the top of the screen, you can see your Conflux Widget shortcuts. You can click on these buttons to open the widgets. You can customize and change the order of the widget shortcuts simply by drag-and-dropping them. At the bottom of the screen, you can see the Conflux widgets are currently active but reduced. You can click on them to restore the corresponding Conflux widget window. Widgets are easily customizable, so that you can keep only services you are interested in and access to them in one click. If you click on the portrait in the upper right part of the main menu, you can access your Dynasty window. For the very first time in the Might and Magic series, you can create your own Dynasty and customize your heroes with powerful dynasty weapons and traits. Several features are part of the Dynasty: your online profile, your dynasty heroes, traits and weapons, the Dynasty Bestiary, your Dynasty achievements and – last but not least – the Altar of Wishes. Don’t worry: we’ll detail these features in the next video. Conflux allows you to join the Heroes community and get all the official information directly in-game. You can chat with your friends and bet informed about the latest game news. Finally, while exploring the world of Ashan, you’ll encounter Conflux Orbs. Each of those Orbs are unique and specific to a map location. These magical spheres allow you to post a message for a specific map or for all players. You can also rate other players’ comments. This can be very useful if you are blocked somewhere in the game, or to get best tips before a hard incoming battle. I hope you enjoyed this video. We’ll have more to tell you about the Conflux in the next video."

Video 2: "Hello, heroes! Welcome to this video from M&M Heroes VI. With the online Dynasty system offered by Conflux, you will be able to build your own dynasty and lead your heroes through many dangers. You can open your Dynasty window by clicking on your Dynasty portrait in the upper right part of the main menu. Your Dynasty Window, you see here, contains some very important features: your Online Profile, Dynasty Heroes, Bestiary, Achievements and the Altar of Wishes. We begin with the Dynasty Online Profile. This window allows you to see your Player and Dynasty details, as well as view your gaming stats and results of your recent games. You can also choose your favourite hero and achievement to be showcased to other players looking at your profile. In M&M Heroes VI, you will have the possibility to create and manage your personal dynasty of heroes. By clicking on this button, you can check out your Dynasty Heroes. In the upper part, you can see your preset and custom-created heroes. You’ll unlock new, unique heroes by completing the campaigns, but you can also create your own characters. In the lower part you can switch between 4 tabs that give you info on the selected hero and allows you to review various information, notably his appearance and ability tree, but also his Dynasty traits and Dynasty weapons. Starting from the second map of the tutorial campaign, you will be able to pick Dynasty traits. They grant your hero with passive bonuses for the whole map. The traits are part of your dynasty, meaning that any hero of your dynasty will be able to choose from your entire pool of Dynasty traits. The more traits you earn, the more bonus combinations you will have at your disposal. It’s up to you to find your favourites! Here you can find your Dynasty weapons. Dynasty weapons are no ordinary artefacts: they gain levels and new abilities as your hero gains experience. Do not underestimate the power of a dynasty weapon! It could give you an edge during hard battles. As with the Dynasty traits, Dynasty weapons are part of your dynasty, meaning that any hero of your dynasty can equip any of the unlocked Dynasty weapons. In the Dynasty bestiary, you can view all the information on the different creatures you have encountered while wandering the lands of Ashan. As you can see, I haven’t seen many creatures yet. The Dynasty Achievements panel lists the various achievements available. Achievements are special objectives that earn you Dynasty tokens when completed. The Dynasty tokens can be spent in the Altar of Wishes. They allow you to unlock various bonuses, such as new Dynasty traits, Dynasty weapons, new profile portraits and so on. As your Dynasty gains experience, you will reach a new rank. For each rank, you will be offered new bonuses to buy in the Altar of Wishes."

Video 3: "Hello, heroes! Welcome to this video from M&M Heroes VI. We invite you to discover the online features of what we call the Conflux. Conflux allows you to extend your game experience and to keep in touch with the whole Community. You can open your Dynasty Online profile by clicking on your Dynasty portrait on the upper right side of the main menu. As each player is different, almost everything is customizable here, so that you can get a very unique online profile. You can also view your Player stats and results of your recent solo or multiplayer games, share and compare your achievements and progress with other players. From the main menu, you have access to Conflux widgets, from which you can view all the latest news and information about the game, as well as stay connected with the Community. These Conflux widgets allow you to surf freely and stay informed about everything while playing. All official news can be checked out if you click on the News widget button. You can chat with your friends by clicking on the Chat widget button. You can send a message to any connected player by typing his login. You can check your messages directly from this window. If Skype is installed and running on your computer, you can also use it directly in-game with the Skype widget. The widget system is flexible, and will be enriched after the game release with new online services. While playing, you’ll notice that the Conflux taskbar and widgets are hidden by default during gameplay. You can activate these services by clicking on the Conflux Button so you can stay connected while playing a good old Multiplayer map."

No, no, Kalah :disagree: , you did it all wrong! :drama:

You haven't posted with the right accent. You must right in the same way that woman speaks.

Now, I didn't see anywhere there and I have a question. Dunno if anyone will know either, but here we go:

Generating your own dynasty, dynasty heroes, etc., will you be able to play your regular maps (or even the campaign) using your dynasty features? Or will it only be possible on other, downloadable maps? On which maps will we be able to play Conflux? Campaign must have its own heroes for the storyline, but you might have the chance to hire other heroes once in a while - will those from Conflux be there? ;|

That remains my question, are the conflux features available only online, or could they be used in user created maps that will be played off-line? If they are only useable online, then they are nice but will have no effect on my purchase decision.

If it works the way it did in the closed beta, then you need to be connected to access your legacy stuff, but they are available for single-player maps.

I understand the legitimate concerns of publishers to minimize piracy, and this seems reasonable on the surface, but we will have to see how it ends up being implemented. Hopefully after H-6 has run its course (shortly after the last expansion); there will be a way to download the online resources to ensure their continued use and availability.
