Orc Evolution

Unread postby Kalah » 12 Jan 2011, 22:45

From the latest Fan Pack:

Orcs have been a part of Might & Magic for a long time, and their design changed numerous times throughout the long history of the series. From the pig-like humanoids of Might & Magic II to the fierce tribal warriors of Heroes VI, you'll notice the Orcs kept one consistent characteristic in nearly all Might & Magic games: their orange-brown skin (the notable exception being the green-skinned Orc of Heroes III).

Very nice. It's good to reminisce.

Playing MM6 (up to Tomb of Varn) at the moment and also halfway through 2,3,4 and 5 so some of those orcs have copped a battering recently.

Orcs did not evolve, they were designed by the divine intelligence known as New World Computing. All evidence suggesting that orcs evolved were put there by the evil 3DO and SoftUbi to trick people into forgetting New World Computing.

Considering them all, I like most the one from Might&Magic II. That's a true pigmen! The latter Orcs are, uh, oh, green, greenish, grey and ubish. :D

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

@Pitsu
Ask Marzhin, it's he who do this picture (as far as I know) and Ubisoft not even credited him.

And where is Orc from King's Bounty (HoMM 0 after all)? :P

LMAO there is an Ogre in Might and Magic VI part! FAIL!
Make you strong places to dwell and practice the evil of your arts. Build great monuments to stand through the ages and remind your followers of the task with which you have been charged. Use these halls of iniquity to perpetrate your schemes against the infestation that has taken the fields and lakes of this land from you, their rightful masters. Never forget the hatred that must finally overcome and consume mankind. Dwell in your dungeons and brood. - Sheltem the Dark

@ Pitsu and XELII - I hesitated a lot before putting this one there but frankly, the MM6 "Ogre" is an Orc in all but name. It doesn't even look like an Ogre as seen in the other MM games - at all.

@ TT: I totally agree - actually I guess in Ashan "Ogre" would just be a bigger kind of Orc. That's why I did this picture in the first place: I find interesting that the Orcs' design change drastically in almost every M&M game. Sometimes it's more D&D-ish Orcs, sometimes more Warhammer-ish Orcs... My personal favorite is the Dark Messiah Orc, I think it had found its own personnality.

By the way, I wouldn't call HoMM 3 Orc greenskinned. Its skin is rather greyish mixed with greenish. And it does have a pig-like face, if you look closer at its unit portait, plus, it has it on the concept art.

One more orc missing:

"Orcs who have been unable to master the skill of throwing an axe, yet are above the common hack and slash antics of a grunt, are given Boars as mounts to ride into battle."
