Life has got to be my favorite, i think they have a great balance. Each level but 4 has a ranged monster or a walker. Crossbowmen and Squires, Pikemen and Ballistaes, Monks and Crusaders, Angels and Champions. I prefer Crusaders, they are my favorite since i saw them in 2, and i favor ballistas slightly over Pikemen, for no reason really. They don't have a range penalty though, which is cool. As for Champions and Angels, I rip my hair out deciding. They are both cool and have great abilities.

Hmmmm, Life ismy favorite too. You're right about that deciding between Angels and Champions, but I prefer Pikemen and Monks.

Yeah, monks are dangerous. Pikemen are good because they can poke you from an extra space away. I just like Crusaders because they're Crusaders. They were cooler in II and III though....

You're right about Crusaders in Heroes 2&3, but in 2 they were the weakest 6th level creatures.

True, but I said 'cooler', not 'stronger'. Heh heh... But they did have the chance to strike twice, and they were the only creatures that could do that.

Wolves in II had Double Strike? I thought they did but I haven't played it in so long I couldn't remember.

Yes, they had. I remember all monster skills from H2-H4, so I'm sure.

I only use ballistas when they are just going to defend. They are killer defenders but as a travelling troop they suck because the slow the heroes down way too much. And as cool and useful as Crusaders are..Monks rule! When you get around 50 monks in your party it kills!

Yeah, Crusaders are a bit on the slow side these days. Maybe they'll be better in V? /:)

Poor Crusaders are gettin' little old... ;)

I actually like the Angels more than Champions, 'cause Angels have their great Resurrection-ability. It depends, sometimes the Champion Charge is more useful though.

No crusaders in H5 but the paladin returns as a mounted metalcan dude this time with a big metal stick and the ground pounding Knights are great to!

Well back to H4 , my set up with wandering hero would be: Crossbowmen, Pikemen, Monks and Champions

For the defending town: Squires, Ballistas, Crusaders and Angels.

And for the Peasants? Defending any mines and keeps my income flowing with gold at the same time =D

I am just wondering, but since when did a ballista have a man operating it? Was that included for the equilibris mod or what cuz none of my ballistae ever have them. Of course I do not have the Equilibris mod either.
