Renegade units in Addon

Unread postby Jolly Joker » 01 Sep 2006, 21:22

Okay, Nival has given the Heroic Coner all the stuff, so if THEY lift the lid I can do it too.
So here is the big deal.
The Red Haven units are alternative Haven upgrades. Although they are named "renegades" they are NOT the renegades storywise (the renegades are the regular Haven units at least as far as I understood the story.)

So here are the alternative Haven upgrades:
Level 1: Brute (Tax Payer; Shield Bash)
Level 2: Crossbowman (Shoots; Rapid Fire)
Level 3: Vindicator (Cleave)
Level 4: Battle Griffin (Large, Flyer, Unlimited Retal, Battle Frenzy)
Level 5: Zealot (Shoots, No Melee Penalty, Caster)
Level 6: Champion (Large, Champion Charge)
Level 7: Fallen Angel (Large; Flyer, Life Drain)

Fallen Angel and Life Drain did it for me. ;)

Rapid Fire isn't explained yet.
Cleave: If this creature’s attack kills at least one creature in the target stack, it performs an additional strike.
Battle Frenzy: Every next retaliation strike performed by this creature inflicts damage 1.5 times as great as the previous one.
Champion Charge: If this creature has walked more than 2 tiles when attacking, it also inflicts half damage on the stack standing in the line of attack immediately behind the primary target.

so now we know they are not the men of Free Cities for sure. In that case, I wonder what's the story behind those guys... sounds pretty cool. Also, I'm wondering whether their uniforms have anything to do with Nival's opinion about Poland :D

edit: could those renegades be the reason for the dwarves being pulled into the wars in Ashan? Maybe they attacked the dwarves to make them think the Griffin Empire is hostile towards them and therefore creating a conflict, perhaps to furtherly weaken Haven (as I understand the "renegades" don't like Haven) and make the job for demons easier...?

Just look at the units and their abilities. Can it be more obvious than with FALLEN Angels having Vampire capabilities and drain the Life out of units. Brute? Vindicator? Those guys shout EVIL all over the place. Looks you can play a really mean and dirty Haven now.

Nice for haven. I guess the other factions get left out of alternate upgrades.

My question is if you choose the alternate upgrade path is it per creature or do you pick that and it happens for all the haven creatures?

Hey, this is a feature from H IV 8|

This sounds like a wicked awesome "town". Thing is, why is it JUST for haven?!?!?! I wish there were alternatives to ALL creatures in towns just like in heroes 4 :) Makes the game more fun to play when you can mix and match your creatures and create new strategies.

but is this a campaign-only thing or will you actually have an alternate upgrade tree? I think it's the first... it would be unfair for other towns and Nival is aware of that.

So,this is the extremely secret thing, the icing on the cake, etc? Not really that brilliant.I still think that caravans are the best think the expansion is to bring.

Im not sure thats how it will work.Seems to me they just replaced the original upgrades so they can better fit the story.Actually, now that Ive reread JJs post,Im sure about it.You will basically have two haven towns. One that, under the influence of markal, became evil, and the renegades that remained true to their ideals.

it seems simple to me, you choose what upgrade path you want ot follow in your town, each having some stuff unique to itself... but if Haven is the only town able to access this feature, I guess it is only available in the campaign (in which I guess you have no choice but to use the alternate upgrade path due to the storyline) as it would be unfair for other towns...

that would be the case if the feature was campaign-only (no choice)

Alternative doesn't imply choice. You could just get it randomly or in a certain map/campaign.

Yes, I do. The point is that a fallen angel is the same thing as a devil, and Inferno already has one of those. It's not the unit, it's the name that bugs me.
