The Greatest Album of All Time

Unread postby Corribus » 09 Jul 2006, 02:20

Well, what do you think it is? What album just ties together perfectly, where every track is special and has its place?

As for me: I don't know.... call me unoriginal but I'd have to put OK Computer (Radiohead) in my top 5.

It's probably not the greatest record of all-time, but I feel that every note of Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth is just in the right place.

Yeah, and Dark Side of the Moon would also be on the list. My personal favourite though is Sting's Mercury Falling.
In War: Resolution, In Defeat: Defiance, In Victory: Magnanimity, In Peace: Goodwill.

Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Haven't got that (yet), so I have to say The Wall. Not one, but two fantastic discs :D

Well Wish... only has like 5 tracks, of course the shortest one is 5+min, and there's a 2 part song at 12+ each.

I can't choose one among these three:

- In The Court of the Crimson King (King Crimson)
- Thick as a Brick (Jethro Tull)
- Meractor Projected (East of Eden)
Cheers,
Boromir

Good choices. For Tull, I'd might be more inclined to Aqualung, having seen it performed.

And if we are considering live albums, can you do much better than Tommy by the Who?

Live albums shouldn't really count but if they do...

Cheap Trick At Budokan
Frampton Comes Alive
The Who Live At Leeds
The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East
Rush Exit Stage Left (or Rush In Rio)
Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison

Any Bob Marley Live (Babylon By Bus)
Most Jimi Hendrix Live (Band of Gypsys)

Also, Sprinsteen, Dylan, CSNY, Simon and Garfunkle... all good live.

Greatest album... Lemme think

My top 5 is:

Maximo Park - A certain trigger
Muse - Absolution
Infadels - We are not the Infadels
Bloc Party - Silent alarm
Blof - (all albums) (dutch band)

Most of these are not really famous (Especially not out of Europe/Holland), but they do make good music.

Oh, and it's a little alternative/rock.
Grah!

Linkin Park - Meteora
Live - Throwing Copper
Evanesence - Fallen

love them, and all the tracks on them

thou some of the original versions of the songs on Fallen (from Origin) are a little more to my liking

Throwing Copper is a great album... actually, Live is from my home-town, in case anyone cares. :)

A great album indeed, yet Absolution was a good one as well. I just got their newest album (balckholes and revalations), and it seems to be good aswell.

I've seen Aqualung (particularly the title track, not the whole album) live 3 times, as they perform this song everytime. ;) And Tull gigs are fantastic. ;) However, the Aqualung album, while being one of the best Tull albums (love it!), is not as original and progressive as TAAB. That last one is an absolute masterpiece from a more "artistic" point of view - it takes more time for it to grow on you, but once it does, there's no way to turn it back. ;) Those fast and mostly instrumental parts in last 10 minutes of the suite are more than breathtaking. :)
Caradoc wrote:And if we are considering live albums, can you do much better than Tommy by the Who?
Well, I'm not very familiar with The Who, so can't say much on this. ;) In case of many bands live albums are better than studio, for example the live material from Absent Lovers double album sounds far better to me than from the three corresponding studio albums Discipline, Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair (King Crimson). Some Yes live albums are also great (just listen to Close to the Edge from Keys to Ascention 2) and Jethro Tull always sounds better live than in studio (TAAB might be an exception, because it's far too difficult to perform live with all the outstanding arrangements) - just compare Aqualung, Pussy Willow or Hunting Girl (especially that last one) performed live with their studio versions - the difference is colossal!
Cheers,
Boromir

I didn't even know Muse had a new album out. I must go buy it now. Thanks for the heads-up Thelonious.

Not sure if I'd call it the greatest, but:

Smell the Glove - Spinal Tap :devious:
Simmons: I think you’re asking me if these computers store all the data on Red and Blue armies?
Sarge: Control Alt Bingo.
