A Patch Early Next Week?

Unread postby Angelspit » 02 Jun 2006, 01:09

Thursday is over and it appears that we might have to wait a little longer for the Heroes of Might and Magic V patch. Here is the official word from Trent, a proud member of the Ubisoft technical support team:

<blockquote><i>"You have to understand that it takes a lot of time and energy to create a patch, let alone one that is bug free. We are working very hard to get it out as soon as possible. Expect it sometime early next week. Thank you for your patience."</i></blockquote>

I wonder what Mr. Trent would say if we asked him whether he was fat or skinny. Anyway, thanks to addicted who posted the quote <a href="/viewtopic.php?t=2149&highlight=">in our forums</a>.

I think they should take as long as it needs to make this patch bug-free and it shouldn't be rushed.

I have two questions:

1. Map Editor???

2.Will the patch only change data.pak, or .exe file too?

I disagree.Unlike the game that needs to be pollished before it gets released(which didnt happen),patches should come out very often.Even the smallest fix should be released as soon as its sure that it works well.

I just hope Trent's statement isn't a farce, meaning I hope he isn't saying what he thinks we want to hear just to get us off his back sort to speak, you know like them giving us the ole runaround and next week turns into next month! :) It would have been nice if he could have mentioned exactly what the patch will consist of.. hmmmm but I guess one has to ask detail questions to get detail answers, maybe! I won't hold my breathe!!! :)

I just hope the patch is as big as the game its self! Considering that this is a fifth generation game, it shouldn't be getting smaller. I must say that im a bit dissapointed with the development in the game play. Maps are smaller, there are too few artifact slots, and skills and abililities slots. EXPAND! i have played 2 maps and are starting to get bored. What happened to the grandeur and intricacy of Heroes IV? Granted, the graphics are nice but come on! Ubi work on the game play please :)
Hats off to all contributors, in all shapes and sizes. Keep up the good work.

Of course the Map Editor is the most wanted future, but it would be a good thing if they fixed at least half of the bugs from Gaidal Cain's Buglist thread...

Maybe there's a possibility that this is the patch they were working on from the moment H5 has gone gold. If so, there is a big chance it will fix most of the in-game bugs...

It would be nice to know what is being addressed, but face it the map editor is NOT going to be part of this one. They have consistently said that would be an update. The terms patch and update may be similar, but I believe UBI intends updates to add, patches to fix.

I'm gonna just assume that the fact they said the Editor will be out in July means it doesn't come with this patch. It seems more reliable to me then the difference between update and patch.

@Daemian - did I hear incorrectly, or did you not just say you disagreed with patches being extensively tested for bugs, then state that they should only be released once they have been repeatedly tested to ensure that they work well? How is that not the same thing? :P

Of course, we all agree there's no point in releasing a buggy bugfixer. So early next week (ie late next week) it is. Fine for me, since the next 3 weeks are blocked for exams.

No.Let me rephrase myself then:They dont need to wait until they found all of the bugs and fixed them before they release the patch. When they find one bug, they should immidiately release the patch, even though there are other bugs they are trying to fix at the moment.

Agreed with everything DaemianLucifer has said.

Nival seems to have this problem with not knowing when to stop. They keep trying to add new things instead of fixing the things they have already implemented. They did this with the game (look how that turned out) and it seems like they are doing the same with the patch. This should have been out 2 weeks ago, but instead they keep trying to cram more and more in.

I would rather see 10 patches that fix 2 things each than 1 big one 2 months late that fixes 20 bugs.

Agreed King_Imp

That is why I ended up with version 1.4, as soon as the first bug was found in my campaign I started retesting each map in turn to see how the fix affected it. I stayed ahead of most of the people and as I fixed each map in turn I immediately sent a new version to CH. Thankfully everyone was very understanding about the whole thing and in the end, I hope it was a positive experience for everyone.

A Patch Early Next Week?

I have to agree with mctronic. Doesn't matter how long it takes, everything that is going to be fixed - will be fixed.

@King Imp: "I would rather see 10 patches that fix 2 things each than 1 big one 2 months late that fixes 20 bugs."

Why does it matter? There is no difference between these two scenarios you presented. They are both going to take the same amount of time,(actually, your preference would take longer because the time taken to release the patch would be multiplied by ten because there would be ten times as many patches) and they both achieve the same result. The only difference is whether we can see the progress. Right now, we can't see the progress, but we know it is because Nival is telling us so, and if we did see the progress, then we know it is happening anyway.

I also have to say that your idea would not be as effective in the long run as the way Ubi is doing it. You are propsing, If I understand correctly, that Ubi should concentrate on releasing individual problems, for instance bugs or errors. By concentrating on only eliminating bugs and errors, yes, we will get satisfaction quickly, but what about the other things everyone is asking for? You guys are saying "Random Map Generator!!" "Map Editor!!" "No bugs!!" "Change the gameplay!!" "Maps too small!!" and other complaints. Ubi is working on all of these problems simultaneously, so they can release everything good in a short amount of time. Which do you prefer, a perfect bug-free game that has not been changed since the original release, or a better, more HOMM-like game with bugs at every turn? Its all gonna happen eventually, so just wait for it. We are lucky as it is, this is the first HOMM game with a demo or a beta, we got to see all the problems lightyears before the game came out. 3DO had HOMM down(because they invented it), now we have to give Ubi that time to get in the game, get their priorities set, and then we can eat them out when they take too long in H6. :)
