Well, isn't this lovely?

Unread postby Alure155 » 04 Sep 2018, 22:15

Yesterday, I've dug into my old disk collection and decided to play some HoMM1 and HoMM2. I installed the files from the disk onto my computer, but that's about as far as I got. Whenever I tried to run either of the games, I would get a white screen, followed by this message:
Image
And the game would promptly close.
There are several things that strike me as strange. First of all, my current computer does not have an E drive, nor has there ever been a user named "Igorl" on any of my computers. I remember the games running just fine on one of my other computers. The reason I don't want to play on my other computer is that that computer is old and slow.
If relevant, system specs for this computer are:
OS: Windows 10

Any ideas on how to fix this?

What kind of monitor do you have?

A few google searches indicate that the game can have problems if you're trying to display it on HDMI connections.

True. Yet again, is advised to use DXWND to prevent any old DX troubles.

Although that probably doesn't explain what is doing Igor on your drive. :P

Thanks, the game is running now. However, there are a few new issues I've encountered.
When I chose to play the Price Of Loyalty campaigns from the campaign menu, I couldn't play any of them. I went back and decided to play the campaigns from the original HoMM2( I have the gold series), but couldn't choose to play as Roland.
Also, the Dxwnd doesn't allow compatibility for HoMM1, it seems.

Quite strange, I will check my GoG version but I don't expect any troubles here.

And what problem do you encounter when trying to play HoMM1?
(Assuming that you are in the right color mode and not having any UHD+/wide resolution.)

Color format is RGB, standard dynamic range. 1920*1080 resolution.
When I tried to run HoMM1, the game just crashed instantly. No strange messages, just an error sound followed by the program closing immediately.

GoG - Seems that you can start here all campaigns like expected.

As for Heroes I. It could be a resolution, in old times I used ResSwitch but that app is now obsolete, being from year 2k.

Well, I found out what the deal was. I just had to set Dxwnd to run the game in fullscreen mode. :D

Nevermind,I found out how to make Dxwnd run HoMM1, H1 is fine now.
Anyways, looks like my issues have been resolved, thanks for telling me about Dxwnd.

After opening DxWnd, instead of going to File>>>Import to import a game profile, go to Edit>>>Add, then fill out the path of the game and voila.

That's alright. I loved Homm3. Only problem is...H3 on newer systems from Vista To 10 OS is crap. My son gave me H3, H2 and M&M games for Christmas from Gog. All worked but H3. So, H3 will never work on newer systems, I don't care what anyone tells me or tries to tell me. On GoG, one of H3 files was in BIN format. Excuse me.... Red Flag!!! (Anti Virus says it's Malware)
All other M&M and H2 games...No BIN files. If You Want to play H3 you better just get XP only!! Otherwise just give it up. It's after New Years, I'm inebriated and just wanna play H3 after beating an H2 map called Trees. I'm So disappointed with the aforrmentioned 3DO/Ubisoft/GoG H3 Complete. And it's sad too as I was on the Wog Team. Just Play any Heroes game other than 3 and enjoy.

My Bad. I Had AVG Free and every time I checked the box to bypass GoG emulator and PS1 emulator, it never recognized that I had them as games. Only as Malware. SO, I deleted AVG Free and am sticking with Windows Defender, which is basically the same thing without the checks, as my AV. It's okay for me to do that as I am rarely online. SO... Go ahead and play H3 with Wog and enjoy it as I am.
