Recently I’ve started seeing people make noises about buying the Trial By Fire expansion. I don’t think it is wise to give Ubisxxt your money if you can avoid it. If you’re not tired of Heroes 3 or 4 or 5 yet, better to wait a few years until GOG gets the right to sell these games without Uplay and in a cheap, user friendly package.


Here are a bunch of photographs intended to prove my point. They represent only a tiny fraction of the problems I’ve had with this game.


Everything is taken after patch 2.1. IE after release of Trial By Fire.


Here is a very standard login problem. One day I just couldn’t login, don’t know why. Next day everything was fine. Rest assured that everything else about my internet was working fine.

The enemy Justicar came out to fight me. There were no enemy Legionnaires nearby, but somehow they got the Legionnaire damage reduction effect anyway.

My heroine Alesia killed a bunch of enemy troops. They killed only one legionnaire of mine. However, AI has decided it didn’t like being defeated, so it made me Jenova instead and gave Alesia 24xp for wiping out the army of a ‘Deadly’ AI opponent.

I’m Alesia. I’m good with a first aid tent, so I held off a vastly larger army with just a single black dragon, a healing sister, and a few days worth of local guards. I had no Armageddon or damage spells, so every turn I was defending and healing and letting the towers kill the enemy. He had damaging spells and 4 Arcane Eagles plus similar other troops.
Ajit’s entire army was wiped out and he killed nothing of mine. He killed only a few days of Local Guards. To placate him, AI gave him 49880xp for the wonderful achievement of not being able to beat me.

I’m Eruina. AI is Kengi. I trashed his ‘Deadly’ army and killed everything in return for minimal losses on my side. Computer didn’t like that, so they gave him six digits’ worth of experience to ease the pain of defeat. http://imgur.com/GNTxz6G http://imgur.com/24gMtG4 I guess each minotaur I lost was worth 100000xp.

After experiencing this bug nearly every time I have a hard won battle, I realized that AI is unable to deal with human nature. Whenever most humans fight AI, anything HARD or lower in difficulty is a guaranteed win, and the only challenge comes in winning without casualties or winning fast enough to prevent the AI ransoming their way out. So I like to pick on the AI when they have a 'severe' or 'deadly' army in order to have a fun battle. I know a Deadly AI army is certain to attack me, so I like to pop into my castle when they are nearby, or else walk near them so that they will attack me.

AI doesn't attack you when your army is Severe or Deadly relative to theirs, and they expect you to do the same. So when AI with a Deadly army attacks a human player, they expect to be the one that wiped out the enemy. Even if you win, they still give the win to AI in the post-battle information screen. (Fortunately this is all that the bug does. IE your hero does remain on the battlefield with his surviving troops, and it is the AI hero that vanishes.)

Come to think of it, if anyone knows how to do in game screenshots, please let me know. My photos suck but I really know only one other method, and that is to press alt-printscreen, minimize the window, open microsoft paint, paste and save to paint, and go back to the game. I prefer something easy and simple to use. I don't want complications with my computer by downloading third party software that could easily mess things up once they get some lousy new update. These are just screenshots after all.

btw I'm not able to play H7 again today because I can't enter game. Dunno what's wrong. I never made any changes to my computer and didn't receive notice of any Windows updates or anything.

What about that "Verify Files" from uPlay? Did you tried it?

I like better IrfanView - but that's 3rd party software. It's full picture viewer, with capture, batch processing, thumbnail view, EXIF info and some simple edits.

I didn't get f12 to work.

Anyway, more bugs:

- Ransom does not work. I've paid ransom a dozen times by now, and not once did I get my troops back. I usually get a hero without troops. Twice I got my hero back with standard fresh hire troops.
This applies to all kinds of situations - different factions, different map/ scenarios, different troop levels, numbers of artifacts, etc.

- Mucksmen miss pretty often when doing their piercing shot. Lets say I line up 2 or 3 opponents. A list of who I am expected to hit appears under my mouse. I click. Mucksmen muck up and shoot only 1 out of the 2 or 3 enemies. On one occasion, I lined up 3 enemies. I was blocked by my own legionnaires, but the opportunity was too good to miss so I wanted to hit the 3 enemies. Instead of hitting 4 targets (3 enemies plus my own legionnaires), I hit only 1.
(They don't miss when doing regular shots. Also note that Acolytes/Disciples do not have this missing problem with their piercing shots. Dunno if it is because their attack type is magical rather than might.)

- Computer has a problem with updating mana and movement points on your hero. Sometimes you enter a town and come out with full mana. Or with your movement refreshed. This isn't about visiting the stables and getting movement points back. It's about suddenly getting all your movement back, or else getting movement when you should have none, such as when you TP home. This bug happens often. On average every fortnight of game time one of your heroes will get this.

- Lighthouses, like the resource-giving buildings, can lose their 'visitation' status. You have a flag on your lighthouse but it says 'not visited' in green.

- Sometimes you pick up a scouting artifact that lets you cast Ylath's Clairvoyance for no mana. You pass it to another hero, but you still get the ability to cast Ylath's C for no mana. Or else you equip another artifact, but the ability remains in your spell book. Or you move the artifact off and put it back, and now you have two Ylath's C's in your spellbook although you can still only cast once a day before your spellbook gets blanked out.
This bug happens very often. Maybe 1 out of 3 scouting artifacts you pick up will have this problem.

Anyway, I reiterate once again. If you're not currently a Heroes fan, don't bother to buy the game. It's still as infested with bugs as a rotten log in the mulch pile. It's only tolerable for people like me who have been deprived of Heroes ever since h5TOTE 7 years ago.

Here's a continuation of the bug list. It's really scary when you think about how this is already v2.1 and game is still infested with bugs...


Time is often reported wrongly. When I was playing the campaigns, after I finished a map it always seemed to take less time. I didn’t really pay attention since there isn’t a scoring system based on how much time you took.
Then I noticed this. I finished the map on Day 1 Week 3 Month 3. But the postgame report said I took Day 0 Week 2 Month 2.

Like most flying units, Air Elementals are terribly allergic to runes. They start flying everywhere when they touch a rune.

This is the Click-Hire Bug. When you are in town and trying to split a stack in the middle of your battle lineup, the split screen pops up right over the Enlist Hero button. When you click ok on the split screen, a new hero will be hired instead. Both these pictures were taken during times when I could not hire a hero by accident. If I could hire a hero, he would be hired and no error message displayed.

This shows that it’s not just the Ylath’s Clairvoyance artifact that gets messed up. I don’t equip so much the Gust of Wind artifact, because Y’s C artifact increases my scouting range. That’s why I have more photos showing the Y’s C spell being messed up.

When in battle, during their movement phase the Centaurs will refuse to step on corpses. So although my centaurs could be moved, thanks to being blocked by corpses they could not go anywhere.

This seems to happen to creatures that can only move 4 or less squares. When approching my army, they stop just outside full range and don’t know whether to brave my arrows and attack, or hang around to exploit half range. They can’t reach me in 1 turn. (note photos show various points in the same battle.)

Blizzard failure bug

Retaliation status is reported wrongly.

Green Dragons are products of the earth, and tend to get merged with the environment... (it seems to happen to them a lot including during the Sylvan campaign – other Large creatures don’t get merged with the environment)

In Heroes 7 the battlefields vary in size, so I can understand if a lineup gets messed up when changing between battlefield sizes. However, my last battle was fought on the same size. The AI still does not remember my lineup, plus it made 2 stacks vanish, plus it took my disciples and stuck them in the middle of the battlefield. I would like nothing better than to take Ubisoft’s owners and stick them in the middle of bankruptcy court.

Happens all the time. It was extra fatal in this case because the hero is Johari who specializes in War Machines and my Small Pyramid was absolutely crucial towards winning. (Note in the photo, both war machines got deselected. My stalkers also vanished but they aren’t essential.) This particular lineup of 2 Arcane Eagles, healing tent, small pyramid and a few stalkers is pretty good when fighting non-spell immune, non-Prime immune creatures concentrated in big stacks. The small pyramid dishes out Prime Magic damage, so it is very weak against Genies and Gargoyles.

Sometimes the battlefield is messed up very randomly. After more than 10 battles without a bug, out of the blue my celestials are pushed forward. http://imgur.com/INLC9iW

Sometimes only 1 stack is messed up. http://imgur.com/ZZB00NA Here the Oak Dryads are moved unexpectedly away. My red hand pointer shows where they were in the last battle.

First bug to illustrate: the Ubisoft battle lineup bug. I had 3 stacks of troops deployed during my last battle on a battlefield of similar size. The Fire Elementals were on the bottom left corner aka to the right of the Titans. This battle, the Fire Elementals have vanished and the Titans + Water Elementals have been moved down.

I find that Shadow Images are very unreliably reported. When I opened the spell book first time, it said the copy would be 0.7x. On my second try, I see 1.3x. As my photos below show, after casting I got 2 stacks of 0.7x each.
From past experience, if under 1.0x, the image size is correctly reported the first time you open the spell book. If you close the spell book and open it again, the Shadow Image would be reported wrongly as bigger.
Computer is very allergic to giving you more than 1x in Shadow images. Sometimes I have heroes with really high spell power (eg 44). If the Shadow Image starts out being reported as over 1 the first time you open the spell book, they will subtract 1 ie 1.6x and 1.7x became 0.6x and 0.7x.

We should consider this a bug or exploit that needs fixing, because otherwise a player can just surround his main units with images that never get attacked.





Conclusion? Buy this game if you love insects (bugs). Otherwise just wait until Quantomas fixes the H7 AI for the community.

just to update with more bugs that I either found or remembered...

1) Justicar still does not retaliate on behalf of her allies. AI's justicars do retaliate, but mine never. I recall that in previous versions my Justicars did retaliate, but not for v2.1.

2) Can't cast Inner Fire or Storm Arrows on my troops if Abbot is next to them. This is not a consistent bug but it happens maybe half the time.

3) Dungeon Heroes' retaliation suppression is ineffective. Not sure if this is a bug. I remember that in previous versions it lasted for a full combat round. Now they only last for the first attack.

ok, just to add even more problems:

1) when you are playing with free skilling, there are three empty slots in the middle of the skill wheel for your Grandmaster abilities. I have found that not all Grandmaster abilities will be recognized. Sometimes you spend a skill point on a Grandmaster ability, but it doesn't appear in that slot. Only the Grandmaster abilities that this hero originally came with will appear in that slot - eg all Stronghold heroes can get the Father Sky's Fury, but if you get Grandmaster Logistics it won't appear.
I can't bring up the skilling window until the next time I level up, and I notice that sometimes the ability that I spent a skill point on has been forgotten - ie my skill point was wasted.

2) I have experienced losing abilities very often. IE waste of skill point leveling the hero up. On a free skilling wheel, these are typically lighted up after you choose the ability. But sometimes after a few days the ability just vanishes ie no longer lighted up, and when you fight in battle or mouse over the hero you find the ability really doesn't count anymore.

3) logistics is not reliable. EG you may have a hero with grandmaster logistics ie supposed to be faster by 20% in all your areas of control. It plain doesn't work. Or else my Native Terrain ability doesn't work. I find their functioning very inconsistent.

4) Mana recharge is very erratic. Your hero's maximum mana can vary several times. Basically, mana events such as visiting the Dragon Nexus or the Mana Core or Dragon Vein confuse the AI. You can get 4x your normal mana, then after a battle or visiting a town, the mana goes back to normal. And if you have spirit altering factors such as artifacts and your Mana Affinity +30% ability, AI gets even more confused.

5) Governor abilities often disappear. They can come back later.

By now I hope I have made my point. Even at 2.1v, this game is barely functioning. It is extremely unreliable. I'm about to deinstall it. I haven't explored everything there is to explore, but my Heroes itch is about scratched already and I have explored this game sufficiently to let it go and forget about heroes for the next few years. I'm still playing one map now, but once that is done - or gotten to the point where I cannot continue due to bugs - I will stop and announce my deinstallation of Heroes 7 on this forum.

Ubisoft just can't make a decent product.

I only started testing H7 few days ago, so maybe I was lucky but:

I didn't have any problem with that. GM were always where they should be.
Did you play random map/skirmish or scenario map/campaign?

I didn't loose any ability but I lost their description sometimes. Usually it showed up on next day or after loading game (I don't rememeber now).

I wouldn't call it "barely functioning". It still has bugs but you can play H7 without gamebreaking bugs and crashes. I had some of your previous issues (like not working Dungeon hero attack or serious performance issues after ca. 4h of non-stop playing) but so far nothing gamebreaking.
AI on the other hand... well, I don't think there will ever be working AI in H7. It needs months (if not years) of works and there is no hope for that.

This is not a complaint.

Just to report that the double shooting/ casting bug has been resolved in v2.2. Also, the pre battle diarrhoea bug seems to be solved. In a few dozen battles I didn't have my units teleported to weird places or vanished.

Only bug that I can see so far, is that the Kraken unit kills are reported wrongly - ie when in battle, if you have hired a Kraken mercenary, when you mouse over an enemy to attack they tend to report far fewer expected kills than what actually happens.

It took them 3.9 gigabytes to patch these things up. Really scary.
