HOMM...Anime???

Unread postby Magelord » 03 Aug 2015, 08:20

And now for something completely different...

Just a random thought that occurred to me while playing Ylaya from HOMM V-HoF, how cool would it be if they made HOMM into an anime? Would you watch it? And well since I thought it up I ran with it and drew Ylaya here and I will draw more characters/creatures in an anime style, at least all my peeps from the Dungeon faction anyway. Let me know your thoughts? :D

I don't have time to watch anime, so the answer would be "no". Especially not if it's Ashan, ugh.

Thinking about it, my previous response was unclear, so please allow me to elaborate as to why I'm so dismissive:

1. I don't like anime to begin with. I think it's over-simplified, stereotypical and juvenile. Not a good start.
2. It gets worse: the drawing above (while of good quality for its genre) taps into everything I dislike about gratuitous sexuality in games. Anime would probably develop this look further. I hate it.

I'm sure you could pitch this to Ubisoft, though; they might pick it up for the Asian market.

Fascinating, I would have thought more gamers would be anime fans as well. Oh well, it's certainly not for everyone. Since coming back to the States after being overseas for 8 years I was legitimately surprised how accessible and widespread anime has gotten here in the U.S. via Netflicks and Amazon Prime, etc. and with the quality of work coming out now days (Attack on Titan, Knights of Sidonia, etc.) I naturally thought more people followed it.

At Avonu, that game was 50% of the reason I drew this! I was so mad that the Dungeon faction wasn't represented I decided to draw them myself, LOL!

Well, you have had clearly watched the wrong stuff. Like Naruto or crap like that. But if you don't like it in general, nothing anybody can do about it.

I am not a great fan of anime either, although this Ylaya looks kind of stylish. It could be that in my eyes anime is a way to mock the overdone "seriousness" that Ubi has tried to put into homm characters.

Not trying to correct you here but it reads like your saying "ALL" anime is a way to mock the "seriousness" that Ubi has tried to put into homm characters. Which I doubt you meant.

To me as an artist and fan of Anime, Comics and just about any other medium from which to draw inspiration anime is simply another genre with which to express ideas in a unique and interesting format. I truly enjoy some of the sleek, dynamic and evocative styles modern Japanese anime/manga have to offer.

As for the seriousness of what Ubi has tried to demonstrate I am not qualified to argue that point. You see I have every heroes game and expansion ever made with the exception of Heroes VI (Boycotted entirely) so I am not up to date with the direction they are taking the world of Ashan. Going back to my appreciation for stylized art however I have since Heroes V become a HUGE fan of French Artist Oliver Ledroit who designed the character portraits for that game. A touch of brilliance on Ubi's part for having such an established artist add his talent to the series.

Talk is cheap however, so here is a small sampling of what I call art as created by yours truly, and although I am capable of creating very interesting pseudo-realistic art I find I enjoy the simple lines and sharp action that anime/manga can communicate.
