It's not at all ugly. 'Not being lousy' seems about the most praise that I can give Ubisoft nowadays.

He's showing some gleeful demeanor there.

Sorry, all I can see is this:

Yeah, why did they make the behemoth so... elepha-gorilla-like? Even the claws are too thin. And why the elephant-seal-nose?

It's big, strong, scary and can shred reinforced steel doors to pieces very fast. You wouln't liketo be chased by this monster while it's in rage.

On the other hand, this Yeti is... fluffy ;) and its fur is always warm, even during blizzard.

The impression the behemoth should give is terror. That one up there is cute and funny at the same time. I'm not sure how to feel right now. :|

Feel pity, mr.hackcrag, for those who need it.

It looks far too human (or well, too gorilla-like just like the H4 one) and the braids don't really help.

The HoMM3 behemoths were liked exactly for their grim, monstrous appearance.

I don't get it, why some devs insist on innovating from scratch when all they had to do was to keep H3 graphics and innovate from that widely loved base.

What is this frankestein? Cow head, rhino teeth, chimp body, erwanasaur.

If I am to take a wild guess then I would guess
muh ashan lore
muh artistic integrity

but that's a wild shot in the dark.

The funny thing is that I'm not even sure if most of the most characteristic HoMM units had any "lore" behind them in HoMM3;
I certainly know titans don't, and what is a HoMM game without titans?

I did expect that answer. :P
HoMM1 differed a lot from the future HoMMs and we can all just pretend Heroes 6 never happened.

Funnily enough then the further into the HoMMs we go, the less I like the designs of the titans; I like the H2 ones more than the H3 ones - although I also really like the H3 ones - but the H4 ones were a big step down and the H5 ones went even further down the gutter. The H7 design looks like it'd fit between H3 and H4 though.

I like the H7 behemoth. The nose is kind of weird, ok, but apart from that it's fine.

The H3 (and conversely, the M&M8 ones) were so much better - more monstrous and with huge, thick claws not these elongated nails. They had bigger heads and fangs, too. Plus, they were clearly magical beings who turned to dust if slain.

They had lore, but often it was in campaign speech blurbs or - even more often - not in HOMM but in M&M games. Titans, for example were back in the HOMMII-III days not constructs created by Wizards, but living beings who worked for them (sometimes).

Actually, as far as I remember, there are no lore about Titans. We even don't know if they were alive or were constructed by someone else (the Ancients?). If you look at their death animation in MM6-7, you will see they are more falling apart then die as living creatures should die. They are also immune to mind magic, which could suggest they don't have a mind at all.
One thing is sure, mages summons many creatures to Towers in HoMM3 - genies and nagas for example - but they are have some ancient pacts with some creatures and titans, living in cloud castles/temples, are probably one of them.
Titans are also powerful enough to stop the Kreegan infestion, according to MM6 backstory.
