Landscapes

Unread postby Groovy » 19 Mar 2015, 12:56

The idea behind this topic is to get a better sense of the factions that inhabit the world of Heroic. The environment that they live in has a profound effect on their beliefs and values, customs and traditions. The landscapes shared here will hopefully make them feel more tangible, and more relatable.

I will start a post on each faction as a placeholder, to be edited over time, so that all the images are located in one place. Discussions can follow…

Homestead faction

Unread postby Groovy » 19 Mar 2015, 12:56

The Homestead land is the most bountiful of all… ...but that bounty is less a gift of the land and more a product of hard labour… …sometimes in very difficult places… …the results of which can be erased in so many ways… …that homesteaders have gone to extraordinary lengths to circumvent them. Cyclic natural phenomena have great influence on the growing of crops. Homesteaders have created various means and constructed various structures with which to keep track of them. The world of plenty has enabled homesteaders to create a sophisticated culture with elaborate customs and rituals that consist of numerous celebrations and festivals, or are aimed at giving their thanks to the forces that make their way of life possible, and placating or banishing those that threaten it.

Barbarian faction

Desert gives what it wants, when it wants. Occasionally, it gives in abundance. Usually, it gives just enough. Sometimes, it gives nothing at all. Sometimes desert gets angry... ...and sometimes just downright mysterious. Desert as a grudging sustainer of life: Survival in a desert is a matter of resourcefulness. Despite the minimalist landscape, a barbarian never gets bored in the desert, and has a rich spiritual life close to the land. Desert landscape might seem monotonous, but to barbarians, it is spectacular!

Alpine faction

Unread postby Groovy » 19 Mar 2015, 12:57

There is immensity to a mountain that makes one feel like a dwarf... ...often reaching high into the clouds... ...and, occasionally, to other worlds. Mountain is the source of water for the surrounding land... ...and heat and soil too. Mountain is the home to untold wonders hidden in its heights... ...and even more so in its depths. It is a treasure trove for an aspiring metallurgist or mineral worker. Survival on a mountain requires resilience and surefootedness... ...or just a pair of wings and a sharp eye.

Sylvan faction

Unread postby Groovy » 19 Mar 2015, 12:57

Forest is literally bursting with life! And yet, forest dwellers regularly witness death and decay. It marks an end, and a beginning, of the circle of life. Light is a rare but welcome visitor in a forest… …leaving it dark, mysterious and foreboding most of the time. Forest has a voice – in the howling of wolves and rustling of leaves… Forest dwellers are relatively sheltered from all of nature's whims save one: Stalking, camouflage and stealth are the best ways to catch and avoid being prey. Even though forest does provide for all who live there: Building a thriving culture in a forest requires cajoling and sculpting without breaking.

Frost faction

Unread postby Groovy » 19 Mar 2015, 12:58

The surface of the frost world is vast and desolate... ...sculpted by water, snow and ice whipped by furious winds... ...that sometimes expose features of the frost landscape that are as dazzling as they are fragile. But beneath the frigid surface lies a network of tunnels that allow sheltered access to the surface while protecting its inhabitants from the storms.

The tunnels themselves lead to several levels of spectacular ice caves that spaciously accommodate their residents.

Surface light cannot reach the lowest tunnels and caves, so they produce their own.

Some caverns are situated on the frost sea. Their floor serves as a doorway to a world teeming with marine life.
(Sadly, I couldn't find any decent pictures to illustrate this with. It's the floor that's supposed to be teeming with marine life, not the walls or the ceiling.)
