So deep down we can't actually see.

Goodness. Even mines have to have spikes now. <g> And come-now, make that dang gold tram larger; say half the size of that "majestic-pillared entrance."

Markkur is right; the proportions on that mine are ridiculous and the floating yellow lights aren't helping.

Since when are the proportions of anything on the adventure map realistic?

Sure, the adventure map locations were never really realistic but instead symbolic. Having said that, this particular mine with its strange outcroppings and dancing lights looks much more artificial than any of the previous gold mines. In fact, it seems more like a ride in Disneyland than an actual mine.

Considering that this would be the only gold mine design available? It wouldn't fit in a snow scenery, for example. Can't they create a outerlayer that would read the surrounding terrain to assume some textures, and much less glimmering lights? Maybe just a pile of gold outside and some mining sound effects.

As far as I can tell from the gameplay video, adventure objects do look different in different terrains, as they always did in previous games.

Ok... One "spike" (it's pointy) and one "spire"

And things don't have to be realistic but they shouldn't look silly either; like that very tiny tram in front of immense pillars.

Exactly! We don't necessarily want the locations to look realistic, we want them to look good, appropriate and tasteful. This gold mine is an example of how not to do it. A simple basic concept was over-decorated and now seems weird rather than convincing or organic.

imho, it simply stands out too much. Something I used to enjoy in older heroes games was finding 'hidden' mines and the such, which were almost all camouflaged by the scenery; secret paths in the woods, adventure objects that would blend in the canvas. Nowadays, everything is shiny, full of floating orbs, rays of light, beams of love and whatever else artists seem compelled to do.

That's right. The artists don't seem to understand the concept of "less is more".

It's funny how you think the cart is disproportionate when in H1 and H2 the cart was twice the height of the mine entrance itself. Not to mention the cauldron of the alchemist lab which was a third of the building's height. I guess you didn't mind back then.

As for hiding the objects, the design had nothing to do with it. It had to do with how well the mapmaker would implement the rest of the scenery. You could still put a single mine in the middle of a valley and it would look ridiculous. I guess you didn't mind back then.

Not so much, I've just grown more tired of it. Especially when the Hero stands next to something that looks like ants would have to push.
