Good Christmas Purchases

Unread postby Kalah » 31 Dec 2013, 03:07

<img src="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/images ... resent.png" align=right>I thought I'd check out some of the good deals out there for you, so you can get your hands on some games if you haven't already. Please don't hesitate to post a comment here if you discover some other good deals out there.

<b>GOG.com</b> has the <a href="/http://www.gog.com/game/heroes_of_might ... c_5_bundle" target="_blank">HoMM V bundle</a> on sale for $20, that's a decent buy, especially considering you get the full game with all expansions, DRM free.

They also have a <a href="/http://www.gog.com/game/might_and_magic ... ed_edition" target="_blank">Might and Magic 6-pack Limited Edition</a> available for $10 - that's a steal. What's good about this is that you get all the six first M&M titles compatible with new Windows OS. Also check out the bonus material.

If you're into point-and-click adventures, have a look at <a href="/http://www.gog.com/game/dreamfall_the_longest_journey" target="_blank">Dreamfall: The longest journey</a>. Made by Funcom in Norway, it's actually quite a good game in its segment. Currently at $15 it's not on the cheapest side, but I think it's worth it.

That <a href="/http://www.gog.com/game/master_of_magic" target="_blank">Master of Magic</a> is available for $6 is a good note on which to end the GOG recommendations. If you see any other good deals there in the coming days, let us know; they're bound to update their sales list soon.

<b>Amazon.com</b> also have some good deals up; the <a href="/http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DOD0TZG/ref ... 1708986682" target="_blank">Bioshock triple pack</a> downloadable for $15 being one of them. These pages change all the time, and I also see the American and UK sites being hugely different, so I'd recommend browsing for good deals and see if anything piques your interest. Generally, Amazon will lower their prices on mid-range <i>hardware</i> slightly (since new, upgraded models are arriving in January), but most software aren't necessarily on sale just because it's New Year's.

One thing I noticed is that the <a href="/http://www.amazon.com/Might-Magic-Heroe ... =heroes+vi" target="_blank">Heroes VI complete edition</a> is available for $10, so if any of you have been waiting for the price to drop on this game, now's the time. What's good about that is that the game comes ready-patched and with the expansion <i>and</i> the DLCs.

<b>Steam</b>'s holiday sale ends January 3rd, and their objects change every day. They have "daily offers" and "lightning sales" (every 8 hours), and as I type this I can see the same <a href="/http://store.steampowered.com/sub/27463/" target="_blank">Heroes VI Complete edition</a> for sale at -75%

I also see some good deals on <a href="/http://store.steampowered.com/app/221380/" target="_blank">Age of Empires II HD</a>, the indie game <a href="/http://store.steampowered.com/app/238280/" target="_blank">Legend of Dungeon</a> and <a href="/http://store.steampowered.com/app/43160/" target="_blank">Metro: Last night</a>. When you browse for games in this store, keep an eye out for games that are playable on multiple platforms; Windows, Apple iOS and Linux.

In addition to GoG.com's $17.44 Heroes 1-5 (and all expansions) plus Heroes Chronicles sale (until January 2), mentioned by Metathron, they also have a bunch of other special bundles at major discounts (Ultima, Wizardry, Settlers, etc.):

I got the Heroes VI complete edition, but since I refuse to buy digital downloads (whenever logically possible), we had to buy a copy from Turkey... it still hasn't gotten here yet. ;|

EDIT: Just arrived today; that's a nice box. @_@

$10 is too much for Heroes VI complete. It is not even worth $0.10.

My $0.02 worth of opinion.

So you're saying that a heavily discounted Heroes VI is worth more than your opinion?

My opinion is worth 2 cents.

Paul Romero’s music for Heroes VI, although not as good as for previous versions, is worth 5bucks.

The rest of the stuff is worth -4.90. So yes, on average, a heavily discounted Heroes VI is still worth more than my opinion.

A Heroes VI without music is not even worth a ten year old’s free time to play. He should play Angry Birds or whatever’s popular.

I should add that you could create a nice screensaver from H6 screens. The sceneries are beautiful.

Also Christmas map is very nice to play and some campaigns, especially extras. So, the game is having its price. Vaguely say somewhere in range 10-20$.

Mainly it's missing the longevity.

H6 looks like a typical GOG candidate to me; a game that can be bought in a bundle with the other games and played for its single-player one-time game value.

As Pol said, the main problem for me is the lack of replayability.

Links to the MMX games have been added to our marketplace. :)

The deluxe box is available from Amazon.co.uk for £24.43, and while there is no physical box available for the US yet, Amazon.com have the deluxe download version for $30.

Pol, if you want a nice screensaver, you could get a program and string together various lovely screengrabs and that would make a great saver too.

In fact, the jpg files could be sourced right from this website, courtesy of your Pictures of the Day!!! Why pay Ubisoft?

Nowhere I implied to buy screensaver from Ubisoft. But you need to own the game first. :P

For taking screenshots and creating screen saver (with music) you can use IrfanView. And thousands of other apps. - If you require special effects. Non-free ACDSee comes to mind.

The Sid Meier Humble Bundle is awesome:

The last three Civ games and a few other Sid games for only a few dollars (as long as you pay more than the current average). And it goes to charity.
