MMX Music Composers

Unread postby Kalah » 27 Jul 2013, 00:39

<img src="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/images ... wshorn.jpg" align=right>The <target="_blank" href="/https://mightandmagicx-legacy.ubi.com/o ... 0000">live dev blog</a> has released a Q&A with the music composers who will create the tunes for MMX: <b>Jason Graves</b> and <b>Roc Chen</b>.

That's confirmed, then, for those of you who were wondering: the composer pair King and Romero are sitting this one out.

Graves is not a complete stranger to us; he was one of the guys working on the music for <i>Heroes VI</i>. Chen is new, although a self-declared M&M fanboy. You can also find the MMX main theme in the Q&A:

There's also a <a target="_blank" href="/https://mightandmagicx-legacy.ubi.com/o ... 0">post</a> about the <b>GamesCom fan day</b>. By participating in a small contest, you can win a ticket to see the devs at the convention.

That's decent. Still nowhere near the main themes of HoMM3 or HoMM4, but decent.

Well, it's not a AAA game, this, so ...

And, really, does anyone buy (or refuse to buy) a game based on the music?

I usually turn it off after the first few minutes because it is just the same short clip repeated over and over (and over and over and...)

Excellent point. To me, the music can be a great plus if it adds to the atmosphere (good examples can be found in the XCOM series), but if it's bad, I'll just switch it off and turn on my stereo. :)

I never switch off the audio. It's part of the game, and it reacts dynamically to what happens in the game (even if it's only during the transitions to another area or the menu, it's still directly tied to the game).

You can turn off the music without turning off the sound effects, though.

Emerald is right. Music is one of the most important aspects to the game for me and it made my H2&4 experience so much more amazing. If you are turning it off, there is a problem. I don't really like this boring generic orchestra melody.

Didn't I emphasise the "dynamic" part of it enough? ;) Your external music doesn't change when you go to the menu or into another area, open a town screen, etc. and is not themed to fit what you are seeing.

I suppose that's right for a game like this; the "battle music" turning on when entering battle, for instance ... But as for longer mission games, where a mission lasts a long time, my own music is better.

It's one thing to not be very fond of the specific soundtrack the game offers and another thing to generally dismiss videogame music because of repetition. As if you haven't heard Smoke on the Water a gazillion times already. For me music is an integral part of the game. If it's good, just listening to it awakens my memories of the game and even makes me want to play it again.

Indeed. That's the reason why I only listen to soundtracks, actually (with a few, rare exceptions).

I suppose that some people just get more immersed in the experience than others. For me, mood music is important for TV and movies and for…um… evenings of… “Physical intimacy” – but not so much for games. It is just a matter of personal preference.

And I still don’t believe that anyone purchases a game based on its music. Good music is a plus, but it won’t make bad game good - or make up for other things that are lacking.

That's irrelevant. No one buys a game based on its code, no one buys a game based on its AI, etc. All of the elements are equally important.

The fact that there are OSTs of games sold separately means that fans care enough to buy the music itself.

You may be right, but music is the one element that a player can shut off and still enjoy playing the game. I don't think that's true for most if any of the other elements. I usually mute the music as it becomes repetitive.

You can turn down the graphics settings and still enjoy the game.

Since this is a hardcore community, I'd expect everyone to thoroughly enjoy a Heroes 7 with brilliant gameplay but H1 graphics. So that's the same. Yes, you can't completely eliminate graphics, but they don't matter that much, anyway. You can also adjust AI too, to the point where it does almost nothing.

Music is part of sound, btw, which I don't think anyone turns off completely.

And to answer the question asked by OneHour, there are people who buy games based on the music; I have once done that. Back in 1996 I had decided to buy H2, despite initially thinking that they changed the game too much (with regards to H1) to the point I didn't like it. Music kept me playing the game and helped in making the initial decision to purchase it. Later on, I fell in love with the game, it's my favourite iteration of the whole series. But had it had uninteresting music, I would have never gotten to that place.

Geez... give me a brake. There are plenty of other reason to not like direction, in which MMX is going, but music is not one of them. Even if you don't like these soundtracks, nowadays you can always easy change them to your favourites - sometimes easier (like in H5 when you only need to rename soundtrack and copy it to game folder), sometimes harder (like in H6, when you need to unpack files first). And you can always turn off the music (like in case of H4, where soundtracks are just awful :P).

BTW Kalah
Why you skipped second track from the same news - Morning in Karthal?
I like it... and I think I heard it earlier in MM6 or MM8 (or at least familiar theme).

I stand corrected hellegennes. Once again, you are right and I am wrong. Your personal preference is certainly more valid and more right than mine. I will go sit in a corner and shut up and wait for more of your wisdom to bless my humble eyes.
