Who should own the franchise?
There have been a lot of complaints the last several years about Ubisoft's buying the M&M franchise. There are both upsides and downsides to this, but I don't want to go into detail on that right now; instead, let's hear your alternatives. While we're at it, we can also discuss who should do the actual game development.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say nobody. What we have now, especially among older fans, is a memory. Memories of our first experience with one of the NWC games. Saying to ourselves, "just one more turn," when it's already 2 am. No one can take those memories away from us, and more importantly, I don't think anyone is capable of duplicating them. They don't make games like they used to, nor should they try. It's a different world now.
Anyone who wants to take on the Heroes franchise has impossibly large shoes to fill. Ubisoft has tried mightily, failed miserably in my opinion (twice!), and still made a metric crapton of profit from it. Rather than continue to be disappointed by future attempts at this, I would prefer they just let it go. Stop trying to recreate a game from a bygone era and move forward with your own ideas. Ubisoft kinda-sorta tried that with H6, but they're handcuffed by the Heroes brand. As long as they use the brand, it still has to at least appear to be a Heroes game on paper.
Let us have our memories. If you want Heroes 3, you know where to find it. It's right there on your shelf next to some of the best games ever made. And if it doesn't run on your hardware, GOG can hook you up with a version that will.

I say the IP should be owned by people who can deliver some mature art style.
IE, less cute-looking creatures (except leprechaun and pixies of course ) and much more important, less bikini armor.

Give the H4 source code to the Equilibris Team,
hand over H5's source code to eager takers at the HC,

Don't worry if things are going badly today. They will be much worse tomorrow.
I heard on another forum Jon von Caneghem (dont mind grammar errors) and his team with Rome Total war 2.
Seen Jon von Canegem litterally made the first games he should be it.
Even though I cannot stand activion as a publisher as of late I like Ubisoft better but that is only for its execution on other games not the HOMM VI one wich is a realyy really dumped down game from the start.
Togheter with bethesda software as publisher and Paul Romero should come back again to do the music instead of quitting.

HOMM should end up being open license, and independent devs can try to develop for it with kickstarter projects.
that way, the FANS get to vote on the best projects directly with their own money.
leaving it in the hands of ANY modern publisher is doom. they all suck now.

it's not just the software industry; same thing has happened to all entertainment industries, for those who haven't been paying any attention at all.
it's time to undercut the publishers directly, and kickstarter is one way to do that.
that way, the FANS get to vote on the best projects directly with their own money.
leaving it in the hands of ANY modern publisher is doom. they all suck now.
