A Farewell to GameSpy

Unread postby Kalah » 26 Feb 2013, 17:01

GameSpy have decided to call it quits after 14 years. Starting up in 1999, same as us, they are now shutting down their site which in this time period has become known as one of the biggest PC game websites out there.

For a while, we were also associated directly with them through the forum portal <a href="/http://archive.org/details/forums.games ... mplanet, a part of GameSpy, until we got our own domain in 2005. Rest assured, we will carry on a bit longer.

The reason for their closure is not, they say, that PC gaming is dead. Instead, the site is being closed down for business reasons, leaving the staff to carry on their work in other capacities, at IGN and other places. So you will still be able to read somewhere about what is going on in the world of PC gaming.

A long time ago I was in discussion with them about opening a Planet Might and Magic site (back when Planet sites were actually good), but we could never come to an agreement. We would be in jeopardy today if such a plan had been put into effect.

Still, they were good for us. I remember when Joost (a.k.a. Silverdawn) gave me access to their news system, which got me hooked on writing news about games for several years. GameSpy really helped bring a little order into the fan site communities in the early 2000s.

RIP

Sad :S but all good things must end at some point. Brings back a lot of memories of early-day computer gaming for me. Farewell, Forum Planet. :rip:

As far as i'm concerned Gamespy died when IGN took over and the old people started leaving...

Man, that site is responsible for half my internet browsing atm... CH, webcomics, funny pictures... learned about all of them from Gamespy...

Man, whatever happened to Fargo anyway?

He left GameSpy/IGN for Blizzard in 2009:

He worked on Mists of Pandaria. Not sure if he's still there.

I also remember that guy with a beard who reviewed most strategy games (and who actually understood what the genre was all about). I can't remember his name...

Honestly the forum-planet sites were inactive since like 2006-2007 (be it Doom, Aliens vs. Predator, Half-Life series or whatever). During the last 5 or 7 years the forum-planet sites were just "cruising" by the tide and going nowhere...
Heroes franchise was not about the free actions of Heroes or monsters, it was not about 3D of shiny graphics either, it was about diversity and balance, simplicity of gameplay and realistic picture, strategy in it's purest form. That's why Heroes 3 will be the greatest game of all, because only Heroes 3 has all those qualities together, no matter which one you personally like more. This statement is unquestionable, uncriticized and undeniable .

The gamespy I like faded away a long time ago, this was just a shell site puppeteered by IGN, feel quite indifferent about this news.

And IMO, if you're going to IGN for PC gaming news, you're doing it wrong..
Infiltrator out.
