Crag the Marzhin

Unread postby Kalah » 12 Jul 2012, 09:50

During the MM Days, our fanboy turned designer presented material from Pirates of the Savage Sea, including the introduction of the hero Crag Hack.

Crag can be seen on the left. No, right ... er ... or left ... No, wait ...

I find it amazing in a sad way how UbiSoft and their associates don't miss an opportunity to use characters from the original M&M universe for marketing their new universe... If they really believe it's important to rely on the original universe (and I couldn't agree more with that), whyever did they choose to officially scrap it?

Personally, I would love to see iconic characters like Crag Hack return -- but as themselves, with their original biography, and as part of their original environment.

OK, so I'll be the first one to say it - the new Ubi-Crag looks...

@JSE Because it was rather a hell of a mess character and story wise, and as in one of the last QaA stated. There was nobady from the original MM team at Ubi (For example JVC refused the offer) with an insight into the world. No info about what direction was chosen to go. Nobady with information about that were only hinted but never directl told. It is like if you would buy a restaurant and all you would have left from its past was the Menu. No cooks, no recepies no ingriediences. Only funny names that could be anything. It is easier in such a case to just create a new menu rather then forcing our cook. The basic thing behind this is, the new cook can create a menu he is able to do and do it better then the original Menu he would have to lerne without knowing what it is.

Then why the heck is the restaurant's name still the same?!

Now that they are both in the same picture..... put the helmet on Julien, lose the glasses, and you get Crag's portrait for Heroes 2.

@GreatEmerald: don't let the lights of the room trick you, I'm actually a redhead ;)

@ThunderTitan: the Crag of Ashan actually has a beard. Not as "bushy" as the one he had in MM3/H1-2, but it's there ;)

Bollocks. The fact that Ubisoft's MM Team didn't put in the work to study the storyline of the games is their own problem, not the MM universe's. Yes, there wasn't any all-encompassing story bible on the original universe, but the games themselves (their plots, flavor lore information, etc.) provided more that enough background and insight on the setting. NWC universe wasn't "fragmentary", it's the impression they got because they had limited knowledge of it, drawing it only from the fansites (which are known for their inaccurate information, to say the least).

The only thing that is somewhat close to a legitimate excuse is "we didn't know what course they were going to take the series". But still, new writers and developers are supposed to have some creativity of their own, and they could make new stories while staying true to the spirit of the original universe.

Heck, they could have created a new world set in the Ancients unvierse. Or maybe make HoMM5's campaigns set on various Might and Magic planets (including maybe even new ones). There were a lot of possibilities, considering how vast the original universe was. The thing is, they haven't played the games, not making any real effort to get to know the lore.
Make you strong places to dwell and practice the evil of your arts. Build great monuments to stand through the ages and remind your followers of the task with which you have been charged. Use these halls of iniquity to perpetrate your schemes against the infestation that has taken the fields and lakes of this land from you, their rightful masters. Never forget the hatred that must finally overcome and consume mankind. Dwell in your dungeons and brood. - Sheltem the Dark

True, didn't they say somewhere that they never played other MM series games other than HoMM3 before creating MMH5?

That stub on his face wouldn't pass as pubic hair, let alone a beard...
