New Map: One by one

Unread postby Angelspit » 21 Apr 2006, 01:26

<a href="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/images/mapscreens/One by one.jpg"><img src="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/images/mapscreens/One by one_sm.jpg" align=right vspace=10 hspace=10></a>One of the reasons why I haven't brought back the Latest Maps summary at the top of the site is because the minimaps of <a href="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/downlo ... d=570">One by one</a> are spoilers. They show a maze-like land where you and your fellow counsellors were sent by the gods after a war had erupted. To get out of this place, you must eliminate all opponents. If you want to download this extra-large Heroes III: Shadow of Death map and start playing, click <a href="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/downlo ... 0">here</a>. If you would rather have a look at the minimaps first, click <a href="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/search ... h">here</a>.

While we are discussing minimaps, tell us if you like to see them back or not. Do they make you want to try a specific map or do they instead spoil your fun? We will update the layout according to your comments.

Personally, I dislike when the minimaps are shown. Most of the fun of Heroes is exploration - so why would I want to see the whole map before I begin? This goes even more so for picture maps. I know a lot of people like them... so why not make it an optional feature?

I agree. though I did use to like seeing them at the top of the page, and without them, they are less likely to be noticed. Maybe a zoom-up of a specific section of the map would suffice for both parties...?

For my part I like a lot seeing the newly released map's minimap at the top. That way I can quickly follow the map scene actuality, and when a minimap please me I download me.

Unless a positive review have been written (or if the map is from a knwon mapmaker such as Laelth), I always look at the minimap, and most of the time take a close look at it in the editor, to check if the map is worth 3-10H of playing time (and more in hotseat).

In my opinion, showing minimaps at the top of the page was very good idea. Bring them back please!

I prefer not to see the minimap because I too like the exploration part of the HOMM series.

I for one don't want them, and especially not at the top of the news page on CH. I visit CH primarily for news, and I want to be able to read a decently sized news item without scrolling down. I also don't wish to judge a map by the minimap- I want to explore myself. A small picture taken from the map would be better for me.

Small parts of screenshots like those featured at CH tell very little about the maps, can be deceiving sometimes and serve for decoration only.

I'd like to have them back, but not the way it was. Prefer a simple link saying: "If you wish to view the minimap, click here."

I'd rather not see the minimap, for the same reason everyone's already said.

I agree with exploration but think that there should be a "Show Minimap" link.

You could also place a part of screenshot besides theme. That way, it will be easier to follow if there are new maps as I download theme only on weekends (during the week, I am at school in different city). And they would be a good decoration.

But thats only my opinion.

Cheers!

No minimap. Exploring is a lot of fun for me and seeing a mini-map completely destroys that.

I don't dislike others' minimaps being shown, but when I make my maps (made only one campaign, actually) I'd like an image to be shown instead. I say this because I'm adept with design programs of course :P

A separate link for minimap will satisfy everyone, it seems. I would like some nice and/or informative screenshot or maybe some other piece of artwork for the map, though. And yes, New Maps section MUST be on the main page. I feel it is sort of necessary tribute to all those creative HOMM fans who keep the game well alive!

I agree with Darken Q.

I think it should remain on main page because it is always good to know which maps are the newest. New picture always makes me hear: "Download me! Download me! I know you want that!" (OK, not really...)

I like them. By the time I start playing, I've forgotten most of what I saw. Since I don't know where I am starting from, it may be some time before I could recognize anything.

And seeing the minimap is a big help in knowing whether the map is likely to suck. It would be extra helpful if the label said what version of the game it is for.

In total agreement with Caradoc - the only time a minimap really gives spoiler info away is on a small map. But in the spirit of compromise: how about a 'show minimaps' tickbox, so your preference is stored every time you return to the site?
