Suggest a better name thread...

Unread postby ThunderTitan » 22 Nov 2010, 07:24

So someone posted this in the screenshot forum:
Corlagon wrote: As Kalah said, the devs are still looking for better ideas - the ones released so far are all preliminary placeholder names - and I'll gladly pass on any you come up with.
I really hope it's true, coz some of the names sound like '90's comicbook anti-heros...

Use this as reference: viewtopic.php?t=11408&start=0

So, let the name-off begin.

I'll go first with Vestal to Seer or Matriarch. Vestal just feels weird for a title of a priestess for another god besides Hestia.

One nice proposal from the Czech forums (Not mine)

Bone guard to Bone/skelatal legionary

Some obvios

Cerberos to Ortuhs

Lamasu to Spihnx

Other proposals

One of the necro champions to Queen of the dead (just love this name from MaM VII)
(And the other could be Speaker for the dead:-D )

Excrutiator to Masochist (just don't like this name, first thing that came up my mind)

Erm... Maniacs, Masochists... Inferno will ultimately turn to be a badly maintained madhouse.
Cepheus mentioned in a HC topic about the same thing that the time for name revision is quite limited (or something like that) and that was weeks ago, so I don't know if making new suggestions is worthwhile. I've already suggested a number of things on HC and the official forums on the other hand. Still almost every newly released creature is badly named and asks to be called something more appropriate/less stupid/less boring.

Actually i think it should go more like:

Putrid Lamasu/Festering Lamasu to Lamasu/Sphinx... might not be perfect, but at least it doesn't have the unnecessary, silly prefixes.

Vestal could be High Priestess too, or even a Hierophant(though that's too much imo).

And Bone Guard should really just be Skeleton Guard... skeleton something anyway, Bone just sounds too plain.

Maniac/Demented would work better as Heretic/Zealot, or Fanatic/Zealot...

We don't know - or, at least, I don't know - exactly when the localisation is going to begin, at which point it will probably be too late. It's possible that it started already. There is still no harm in continually posting suggestions; I'll notify them of everything posted here.

Also, following the example of Breeder/Mother Breeder, the Juggernaut/Juggernaut Ravager can become F***er/Mother F***er. :proud:

Juggernaut/Juggernaut Ravager could use some shortening too, something like Berserker/Juggernaut. Or Hellbeast/Juggernaut.

Since we already have Juggernaut and Sentinel, why not rename Maniac/Demented to Omega Red, Ghoul to Ghoulverine or Weapon XVI, and Vampire Lord to Mr. Sinister to spread the X-Men love? :D

The only two I have any little problem with have nothing to do with the unit name, but moreso their prefixes. Those would be the Sun Rider/Sun Crusader and the Putrid Lamasu/Festering Lamasu.

Not sure what I would rename the Rider/Crusader to. My first thought would be change Sun with Celestial, but then that's repetetive with the Haven Champion unit. Rider and Crusader are fine, but that Sun part has to go. Maybe Holy Rider/Holy Crusader?

As for the Lamasu, I'm not keen on calling it a Sphinx. I personally do not see Sphinx when I see this unit. If anything I see a Manticore. If I were to change it, I would just leave the base unit as a Lamasu and change the upgraded unit to an Ancient Lamasu.

Hmmm... i see i never suggested Dawn Rider and Dawn Crusader... i'm sure i meant to. Although i'd go with Dawn Knight, or Dawn Champion... Rider just sounds to mundane.

Human face, check, lion body, check, wings, check... big, sharp shark-like teeth, nope...

Sure, the tail might count, but that is easily explainable as undead skeleton tail.

And Lamasu's where bull bodied... but i guess they took the D&D lamasu.

As per the official description of this unit.
The Lamasu were a failed experiment by the wizards to create a superior breed of beastmen, by the unnatural fusion of a human being (usually a slave or criminal) and a magical creature (in this particular case, a Manticore).

A the amazing vision we all had back on the old boards. They did actually listen to us after all :devious:

what about Breeder > Spawner (or vica versa)?

Not to mention 'radiant' and 'blazing'. Just call 'em Avatar and Fury or something like that...

As per the Facebook update:
Thanks to your different feedback, we’ve reviewed some creature names:

- Priestess is now Sister
- Temptress is now Lilim
- Excruciator is now Lacerator
- Juggernaut Ravager is now Ravager
- Bone Guard is now Skeletal Spearman
- Grave Ghoul is now Ravenous Ghoul
- Putrid Lamasu is now Lamasu
- Festering Lamasu is now Putrid Lamasu

Unfortunately they stuck with the silly adjective for the Lamasu upgrade.

Personally I thought Priestess was okay. At least much better than just calling her Sister now.

And like I said on the HC boards, Lilim is plural. Very nice change, eh?
Actually I can't say I like even one of the changes, especially the Sister. Skeletal Spearman is stupid as well - this thing is armed with javelins and looks like ranged support, while the spearman is melee infantryman. The others range from "whatever" to "yeah right".
