Magic heroes: Distinctions..

Unread postby Lord of the Guns » 08 Nov 2010, 10:32

This thread is the discussions restricted to Caneghem universe only. NOT the world of Ashan.

I'm quite a big fan of Caneghem verse.

when it comes to MAGIC heroes (or characters) here comes the lists
1. Cleric / Priest
2. Conjurer+
3. Mage
4. Wizard
5. Druid
6. Sorceress *
7. Witch *
8. Witch Doctor *
9. Warlock
10. Artificer+
11. Enchanter
12. Battle Mage
13. Necromancer

Since the Reckoning
14. Sorcerer

OK Necromancers were discussed in another topic already so we don't discuss about them here. the discussions here is.
a. Does H4 Sorcerer and the colony Sorceress THE SAME THING? since sorceress is gender restricted (marked by ASTERISK). as we've seen. all of them are femme.
b. What's the distinction between Wizard, Warlock, and Magi
c. Does "mage" the generic term of "magic hero" when the term is combined with "Battle" the meaning doesn't seem to change except that Battle mage also capable of MIGHT things. where few are capable of such.
d. What is the distinction between Warlock and Sorcerer? since much of COLONY warlocks were relegated to the chaotic sorcerers (?) since the RECKONING.
e. And the distinction between Norastonite Sorceress and Antagarich Witch please, or are they basically THE SAME? (...Gem, and later, Luna. were the only Norastonite whom reappears in Heroes 3 and H4 respectively.)
f. Who are Artificers and Enchanters? were they the same as Wizs? or only just close to the latter?

Not really. Enroth sorceress is and sorcerer are nearly the same (sorcerer is basic class for wizard/archmage hero in MM6-7). In Axeoth Sorcerer is: The Sorcerer wields the awesome destructive force of Chaos Magic to obliterate their enemy. Whether it's a well-placed Fire Bolt or an indiscriminate Armageddon spell, the Sorcerer is a deadly opponent.
So mainly he focus on destruction spells (fire magic) not on spells from all magic schools.

There was special topic about this, here or in Campfire forum.

Battle mage is mage trained to use magic in battle, when he fight along troops. Also he probably know basic weapon skills just to survive battle chaos.

ENROTH Warlocks are in fact adv. class of druids (in MM7), however they use elemental and self magic to help themseves, not nature. They known all magic schools and are focused on summoning creatures (elementals in Gharik's Forge, Castle Alamos, Thunderfist Mountain), creating new artifacts (Castle Alamos and Gharik's Forge) or new species (evil eyes, minotaurs, manticores, hydras).

Norastonite?

They are mages who focused on one "school" to become master of it. So Artificers are mages who create new items while Enchanters... well, they enchant items or creatures with their spells.

Generally Nighon is associated with warlocks. That kinda makes them something like dark wizards, but not yet necromancers. The guy who promotes druids to warlocks in MM7 is very polite, unlike those who are evil to the core, but still won't help people who chose the light path.

As far as HoMM is concerned, the Witches are exclusive to Tatalia (see Revolt of the Beastmasters), but there is evidence from MM6-8 that they're a larger order.
"The Witches' Assembly of 638 was the greatest gathering of sorcerers and alchemists ever. Since then, the popularity of the magical arts has declined, and persecution of groups like ours…er, theirs– has grown quite a bit. It really is quite awful."
Generally, spellcasters in the MM series are "what it says on the tin". As far as I remember, Warlocks are probably the only exception - they double as "scientists".
