Great TV sport. I just put the TV on, and for 5 hours, it gives me background noise while I play games, work out, read the paper or do homework.

Well looks like the video card was the problem... and of course they don't make them anymore...

Anyone got any good alternatives for a GeForce 8800GTX ?!

@TT

SkyNet fights just people with BSoDs :D, try either Sapphire HD 5670 or one of its variants or Gainward GTS 450.

Well, you had been guided. ATI is probably still a better choice however I never tested GTS 450. Check if you have proper PCIex 16x slot for seating them, there may be solution for AGP too but it would be on a different tune.

And a special remark:"Both cards are not from the same category. The first one is weaker and cost significantly less. If you're just hungry for power go for HD 5770 and up! But if you like to keep your money in your pocket.. "

Oh, i forgot to mention, the card is getting replaced under warranty, they just don't make them any more, so they'll probably give me something else.

So i want to know what cards would be around the same performance wise so i don't get something weaker but with more RAM or something.

There are still GT9800 or GT250. Both obtainable and both representing natural replacements. I really don't think that they will be able to puff out another GT8800 from a thin air but you never know! :P
(They have a bit better performance. So if possible avoid of GS or GSO for lower clocking speeds and DDR2 with thin bottle neck, ie get bus wider than 256bits min.. Also many eco editions are weaker, some of them are even going without need of auxiliary power. That may or may not be advantage. See your PSU for wattage :) And again check clock speed for ECO cards as well. )

Is a GT9800 really as good as the 8800GTX?!

BTW, what's the difference between the 250 and 450?

:D

I think you'll be fine with either one. If the company will let you choose, get the most expensive one. ;)

A big one. Let put here a chronological line:
8800GTX (revolutionary card with which nvidia beat everyone)
9800GTX (8800 refined, practically the same card, the eco editions were manufactured by a better technology)
GTS 250/GTX 260 (once again refined 9800, almost solely manufactured by 45nm tech)
GTS 450/GTX 460 (new type of chip based on fermi, pretty exactly on GF106, finally support DX11, very good tesselation)

If you had GTX previously, you should receive GTX now too. But it must not been so. To sum it in other words, overall performance must be the same or higher than with the previous card in every aspect. Thus very likely you will get GTX! :D

8800GTX > http://www.nvidia.co.uk/page/geforce_8800.html
9800GTX > http://www.nvidia.co.uk/page/geforce_9800gtx.html
GTX 260 > http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/geforce_gtx_260_uk.html
GTX 460 > http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/product- ... 60-uk.html

Take attention to memory bandwith, the other parameters are not identical. Anyway 8800GTX, 9800GTX and GTX260 are nearly identical. Practically same performance. Although it's not exactly that every other editions is stronger in every performance aspect, they're close to equal.

Gainward and Zotac are the clasic case, when the GT OC edition can provide almost the same power as sample GTX. Anyway only numbers and performance tests on the net will show you, how will stay the model(s) which they will allow you to choose from.

They may also refund money, don't forget that! :P *

*If that will be so, you may wait a little while and then buy an ATI Radeon 6850/6870

Let see a perf. table:
* Radeon HD 5970 2GB - X13600
* GTX 480 – X9700
* Radeon HD 5870 – X9100
* GTX 470 – X7800
* Radeon HD 6870 – X7500
* Radeon HD 5850 – X7300
* Radeon HD 6850 – X6500
* GTX 460 1GB – X6500
* GTX 460 768MB - X6100
* Radeon HD 5830 – X6100
* Radeon HD 5770 – X4600
* Radeon HD 5750 – X3700
(~source)

The ATI HD 68XX cards should start to appear on the markets from November till March next year.

Currently reinstalling everything on my laptop after having formatted the HD and reinstalled Windows XP. The normal driver issues, of course, but it seems to be almost over now. Now I'll just download some anti-virus, and the usual batch of programs to run ...

Clean PC, yay! :)

Why don't you keep your installing programs on another partition so you don't have to d/l them all, but just install them?

I don't really do partitions.

Went for a 45 min. walk to the shop and back. Now it's time to make some muff ... muuuuh ... muffuhuuuh ... (can hardly say the word for anticipation) ... muffins for the guys at school.
