What, no Olympics-thread?

Unread postby Ethric » 18 Feb 2010, 19:38

Well here it is, then :)

Woohoo, Norways second gold medal just in, with Tora Berger winning the 15 km biathlon, AND it's Norways 100th winter Olympic gold medal of all time. Huzzah :D

Anyone else got something to cheer or huzzah at?

I gotta pick on the Canadians a bit ...

These are the crummiest, most poorly arranged, least well-organized Olympic Games I have ever seen. Skiers not being let out of the gate at the proper times, slopes and tracks being dangerous to athletes, and I won't even get started on the poor handling of the TV broadcasts. Amateurs. Seriously, I hope Canada are not awarded the Olympics again for a hundred years. End of rant.

Norway had a poor start, with the worst performance ever on the male cross country skiing front, but now we seem back in the proper form, sweeping in medal after medal. Now if we could only get those curling dudes to dress in less clowny-looking pants.

Seth Wescott skied (?) a brilliant race in the finals of men's Snowboard Cross a few nights ago. I watched men's speedskating and women's downhill at bowling on Wednesday night. I didn't bowl right away on my turn a couple times so I could watch Shani Davis and Lindsay Vonn win gold in their events. w00t!

These games have re-affirmed my three core truths about the Winter Games:
1. Lugers are certifiably nuts.
2. Americans really suck at Curling.
3. Figure Skating is still lame.

Not so my dear Kristo! The USA won the GOLD Medal Image in Men's Figure Skating last night. Image

Although I've been a huge Evgeni Plushenko fan for many years, it was great to see Evan Lysacek win the gold.
Way to go Evan! Image

Figure Skating ROCKS!!

Two gold medals for us today. Men's super-G and 15km cross country for women. :)

Hey, lame sport or not, medals are medals. So congrats all around. But I maintain that any sport with a designated Kiss & Cry Area is unmeasurably lame.

I'm watching men's Skeleton right now. It's luge, but head first. Yikes. Oh BTW, shouldn't we have watersliding in the summer games to match?

Speaking of looking good, do you know who just doesn't in this OL?
That Tora Berger from Norway. Generally that discipline isn't loaded with pretty faces... :S

Skeleton is insane. Those guys are the kind of people who do base jumping and bungee jumping at the age of twelve and think to themselves: "No, this isn't quite exciting enough".

I just watched the men's 30km Pursuit. Amazing race! It seemed fitting to have Al Trautwig announcing with Team Sweden going all Tour de France on everybody.

I saw. People say tactics don't work in cross country, but it did tonight. I heard one of the Swedish coaches giving the leader feedback in one of the hills; he said "(the other two) are behind you, slowing down the pack".

Our Norwegian fave broke a pole on the last mile, and so lost the chance to sprint for the gold.

Some of those Danish curling girls are quite yummy, aren't they? :devious: The Norwegians aren't there. The girls, that is. Only the male team qualified, I think.

One bronze today, in ski cross, but another disappointment in the alpine course. Svindal was leading the combination after the downhill run, but didn't finish the slalom.
