Necromancer Town Music Evolution

Unread postby Shyranis » 16 Sep 2009, 15:12

Time to twitch from your graves and throw some bones, the Necromancers have come before you to be judged!

Heroes 2 Necromancer <-I've been apparently yelled at on Youtube because people who pirate the game hear this song in the Barbarian town.
Heroes 2:PoL Necromancer
Heroes 3 Necropolis
Heroes 4 Infernopolis
Heroes 5 Necropolis

Which one makes you rise from your grave? ^_^

Nostalgia votes do count.

Voted Heroes 2, with Heroes 3 in at a close second.

By the way I'm whplague, and this comment
"I bet you only played the game with the crappy MIDI music, which used the wrong songs. Play it with the original game CD, with Audio tracks" was NOT directed at you, but at the moron who told you you had the names wrong.

But since his comments have been removed I now removed mine as well.

The problem really is that the songs in MIDI settings are all mixed up! And people who play a pirated copy only ever heard the midi version and think it's the real deal.

For me, it's between HoMM II: PoL and HoMM III.

HoMM II: PoL is a beautiful tune, perhaps not the most suitable for a necromancer, but I don't really care, to be honest.

This is one of two HoMM III songs that really stick out (the other being Rampart). It's the last part of the song, starting at about 1:56 that is amazing, the first three quarters are good but not stunning.

By the narrowest of margins, I give this to HoMM III.

Heroes 3 is my favorite. It's the gloomiest of the bunch, while still being interesting.

Heroes 3 for me, it fits there most.

Had to vote for H2 POL. That's the one with the opera, right? If not, then I like te H2 with the Opera music. The best music hands down.

H2 POL is the one with the piano in the middle of the song. H2 vanilla is the one with a male opera singer.

A recurring part of the HV one reminds me quite strongly of the old Jewish song"Eliahu Hanavi." It's a bit hard to be scared by that.

Anyway, there was a period where I wanted to make the H4 Necro theme (at least the first two-thirds) my personal theme song. It's my hands-down winner.

H2 vanilla comes in second. For some reason, the H3 one doesn't feel like music to me so much as elaborate ambient noise.

I voted for PoL, but I also really like the Heroes IV Necropolis theme. It captures the character of Gauldoth masterfully and is one of the most compelling compositions in the entire soundtrack. The song is just full of conflict. It alternates between the evil brass themes of Heroes III and heroic themes, perfectly complementing Gauldoth's schizo nature.

When the evil part of the song plays, you can hear faint hints of the heroic theme. And when the heroic part plays, you hear the evil motif clawing back. I love it. The song keeps transitioning between the two.

Bear with me here as I do a quick walkthrough of the song.

It starts with a militaristic-sounding march, similar to the undead theme in H5
At 0:30 the good theme starts to blend in to the marching music, it starts to sound uplifting
At 0:55 the evil theme kicks in, lots of brass, notes go lower
At 1:20, you hear the good theme kick in with the string instruments, briefly
At 1:36 the evil theme returns courtesy of the violins
At 1:57 that evil theme morphs into a heroic, uplifting sounding theme; the violins and horns start playing higher and higher notes
At 2:20, bam! it's back to evil and brass

H3 is a bit too noisy to my taste, so I'm going with H4 here.
