So, what would one look at when wanting to purchase one?

And how does this one look to you: EMAG

his one is okay. I have a Toshiba 1tb, never had any problems with it, and it was pretty cheap, so perhaps think about buying one of those...

Well it has 7200RPM so you may have to be careful around it as it's more fragile in its lifespan. Speed isn't that important, what do you plan to use it for? If you want performance get an internal one -- externals are mostly for backups or other things like that (which are not for daily performance).

You could also get one with Firewire interface if your mobo supports it. It's supposed to be faster, though it all boils down to the HD's speed in most cases, not the serial bus's speed.

Anyway I hope you don't plan to install Windows and boot from it -- Windows doesn't boot from USB without nasty modifications (which I know but are REALLY complicated, and I would avoid them myself if possible, unless you absolutely need to boot from USB).

@Pol
Hmmm, looks interesting, and it's available on EMAG. Anyone else care to give an opinion on it?

I don't have too good experience with these big ones. Until they own also fw they're mostly slower. My impression is that they're "overgrown oaf".
(On the other end, the capacity makes a considerable plus. )

How much critical data you have to backup? If it's in the 32-64GB range (small), you could get a SSD (solid state disk, it's actually flash memory). Much more reliable than harddisks. Again it depends how valuable and how much you intend to keep it non-corrupted before transferring it to another backup or storage medium.

And most important question.

Do videos and pics count like a critical data?
(Certainly including TT guides on how to devise time machine, mushroom atomicle and paralyze the girls per eye blink ;) )

Hey, porn can be easily replaced, no need for backups.

Critical data?! Yeah, that would be in the MB, not GBs... (pics and movies i keep on cd's).

I do have a lot of music that won't fit on my 14,9 GB flash drive though... and the space on the HDD is more of a consideration for the future.

If no one else has any suggestion i guess the 320 WD is the best choice based on price vs quality...
