A Cheerless Status Update About Might and Magic Tribute

Unread postby arturchix » 21 Nov 2008, 14:52

“At the moment the project is at an almost complete standstill.” – this is what writes Might and Magic Tribute project lead Ribannah at Castle Gobs forums 5 years after the project was started. It seems the once promising fan project to create a brand new Might and Magic RPG game (set in the old Might and Magic universe), is slowly walking towards an unfortunate end.

According to Ribannah, from now on everyone can contribute to the project without joining the MMT developer team. You can check out Castle Gobs wiki and see if there’s a way you can somehow help.

Ribannah, in case you happen to read this - if you want to ever finish the project, you will have to use already existing stuff from previous M&M games. The sooner you decide it, the better or the project is doomed and the input energy of all MMT project contributors will be wasted for nothing. Also, in the Round Table M&M forum there are several modders who have modded MM6-MM8 with remarkable success – it would be great if you could unite forces in one project so that at least one sees the daylight.

Unless the guy died or something, couldn't he just come back for a few minutes to say 'sorry friends, you can go on without me.'

I'm sorry for the Tribute project. To be honest, even though I was amazed by the artwork they produced, I never really thought it could be completed someday -- the scope was just too big as you pointed out. I always feel bad for the people who spend their free time on something but never get the chance to see it finished.

Reminds me of all my dead projects.

Me too. Although for all those short stories that I started but never finished, I only have myself to blame and the actual writing process was beneficial, it was something I had to do.

It's sorry news indeed. I hoped it might come to something more than a demo one day, but fans can only do so much... I do maintain that it could still be completed using the old MM engine.

That are bad news :disagree: I would prefer a few projects done rather than lots on half way that get cancelled.
But this doesn't need to end, there are some modders here, they could look into the project and see if they can help.
I hope this is finished some day...

I hate to say this, but I have actually wanted to see for the past few years if I could contribute... and this ushered me to try and register for the board(Castle Gobs Forums) and I sadly cannot. It says that I dont have permission to use this board. :(

Sucks to hear this. But wasn't that the status for quite some time now?

I don't know why but there's this interest and you're always excited before starting a big project but you never finish it because you somewhat lose interest along the way and get bored of it ('you' here was a generic 'you')

Well, at least, that's what usually happens to me. :D

I'm involved in 1 project ATM. Never did anything like this, but it's fun to do still. And I wrote a lot of stuff yet :). Still not even halfway through, but ideas keep coming in my head!

Well sad as it is to hear, it dosen't come as a suprise. I haven't been part of the dev-team for several years. But from what I can tell there was some progress around the time they got the new engine. But it seems to have been a standstill for the last year or so. I think the main reason is that the project was to ambitious. If all plans would have been implemented in the game it would as large as, or even larger than, MM6-9. That's huge to be fan-made game. To create such a game you need many entustiastic people and great project management. When the progress is slow for a longer time then people move on.

I think it's a great idea to open up the projects and join forces. MMT as first envisioned is dead. Now let's gather froces in the mod-community and make a new MMT live!

It was a setback for the team at that time, and many devs asked themself exactly that question. It does seem that Sir Felgar was active on internet after he "left" (some time after his last post on our old dev-forum at least). Of'course it was good to have indication nothing seriously bad had happened to him. But all the more it made the sudden disaperance even stranger. Anyhow, I think he did a fine job starting the project and managing it in it's early stages. He have earned credit for that.

Might and Magic by 3D0 was a personal favorite. The game lacked one basic element - control was resorted to the arrow keys for movement and not the mouse. If you could deal with this, it was a great series with awesome plotlines. An RPG should be played with mostly the mouse, no? Keyboard commands force you to use both hands. Kings Bounty was mostly mouse driven, can a mod be made to make M&M like this? Also M&M had the option of turn-based battle by hitting the spacebar, THIS MADE THE GAME FAMOUS! If one could configure (the game) for a control pad, then the mods would succeed!

"An RPG should be played with mostly the mouse, no? Keyboard commands force you to use both hands."

I have two hands, what's the problem? This isn't Baldur's Gate, M&M is a first-person view RPG, and FPS-like controls are far more comfortable for this kind of gameplay, unless you have only one hand - speaking of, one of my friends right arm is missing down from the elbow, but still plays UT and CS with keyboard+mouse.

By the way, I always use hotkeys - way faster than using mouse to do everything. Also don't forget about old crpgs and some Roguelikes, which never used mouse.

"Also M&M had the option of turn-based battle by hitting the spacebar, THIS MADE THE GAME FAMOUS!"

This feature was only implemented in M&M6. The older episodes were pure turn-based, first-person view crpgs, but still famous.

It's interesting to see though, that this feature is still alive and kicking, although many won't recognise it: welcome Fallout3's VATS. It's almost the same, just with one character, and it's Action Points based.

Euhm, don't you mean that "enter" puts you in turn based mode ...
