Weak early..? They are amongst the most powerful I'll have you know.
I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

I like the barbarians. The warcries and rage are quite nice. You can get might over magic and magic resistance to help against magic as well as shatter dark if you are going against a dark magic user.

My favorite barbarian unit is the untamed cyclops. The crushing blow with his huge club is fun. I like the Paokai too. The ability to eat corpses it great. :)

Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

In my experience they are very weak early on, with lots of casualties, which I find annoying.

Of course I've tried dark.

My point is that regardless of hero barbs are strong. (most of the time I play all random. When picking they always pick Haggash.)

Sorry I misunderstood that it is about fashion. I like how different it is from the other factions...

@Metathron
Kragh 14 archangels early week 2 with only week 1 army. Or pack of death knights with Haggash day 7. First case of excruciating strike and second flaming arrows of death :)

If you look back to a previous post of mine, you will see I was referring to the dwarves. Because I did not mention them by name, you thought -- with good reason, since the thread is about them -- I was talking about the barbarians. About them, I definitely agree they are among the strongest factions early on, even though I haven't achieved anything as stunning as you say.

You were talking about dwarves? 8| I interpreted it as Barbarians as well :P

I really like the barbarian faction as well. I was never a huge barbarian fan in the previous games (despite my avatar), and I found the H5 incarnation of the barbarians interesting and unique.

As mentioned above, the warcries and blood rage are fine abilities. But what really sold me was the goblins. Watching a cyclopes toss one of those critters around the battlefield just cracks me up!

Do you find them weak early on because liberal usage of Rune Magic is too expensive, or they are just too weak even WITH the Rune Magic?

Ok, here's something that would make barbarian a lot cooler. For the slave-selling ability, instead of just buying units and selling them at the stronghold (boooring) they should get a percentage of captured slaves after a fight and the slaves are shipped back to your base in caravans. That would be cool.

And make a overpowered/extremely unique faction even more overpowered and unique? I don't think so.

Lets first consider giving factions like Haven some decent special abilities, then we'll talk about selling slaves.

Yeah... that's what I was thinking, I just preferred to make the point about how knights have NO special abilities, and it sucks. Training isn't even unique really...

On-topic: H12&3 barbarians are a dull faction, like all in those games are. In H4, they are an extremely weak faction. In H5, they are a unique faction with its own features (like all factions in that game are) and they finally feel liek a faction that despises magic.
As for the looks, I like them if for nothign else then for not being green. I am not a fan of green orcs and goblins.
Agreed on some of those points, but I think they feel pretty much different in h4 too... and they are NOT weak at all! Their endgame-creatures (cyclopes, t-birds, sometimes behemoths) are very strong and special and their low-levels (fodders) are extremely useful for creeping. Even when they fail to learn real magic (which is usually THE way to go with them - well ofc the map has to allow it), they have a powerful and special rush and other ways to compensate.

Hey, csarmi, nice to see you posting after such a long time! Did you know there are rumours of HoMM VI?

On topic: I like all of the barbarian factions throughout the games. I agree the HoMM V concept may be the most original because of rage, but for some reason the simple HoMM I-II lineup is the dearest to me.

Like a few others here I only play vs AI.

I like the barbarians, a lot. I also like all the other factions (except maybe the demons). With Barbarians I always go for Luck, attack, defence, War machines, Logistics. I always try to start with the Centaur specialist Hero.

As for "this faction sucks" I suppose it depends why you play. They all have differences in abilities, and that, for me, is why I have played HoMM 2 - 5 for SO many years. If get tired of a faction, there is always another to try on a map I have "forgotten" about, as well as a different flag colour from a different perspective.

The animations and colours don't make a difference to me, but the chance to use different abilties and creatures in different ways is what keeps me coming back for more. If I don't like something I don't do it. (That said, I DO go to work etc.) but this is a chance to unwind relax, forget about day to day stuff.

Personally I find the whole series well balanced, IF you pick your battles carefully, and are prepared to change strategies and battle tactics for various factions.

Just my opinion, of course.

You just love to play with overpowered heroes, don't you? :P

You're losing a lot of fun from this game by playing only with one hero. The variety between their specialties and starting skills add to the fun factor as well ;)

I thought the whole point was to build up heroes to a powerful level. Perhaps I am missing something. Now where is my hair shirt?:P

As for using only one hero, sometimes I splash out and have TWO!!!! Actually, I ALWAYS hire a second on day 1, and usually end up with 4 or 5 sometimes all 8 isn't enough.
BTW I remeber on H3 you could move heroes to the defend slot in town and that way hire more than 8. Doesn't seem to work in H5.

Still fun though.

No I didn't mean that you play with only one hero in a game, I meant that you choose as your main hero only one of them all the time (and that's the most important one)
