Washed Out Textures problem

Unread postby insane81 » 02 Sep 2008, 07:32

Hi guyz,

I've been searching for quite a while in here but I cannot find the answer anywhere...I've been also browsing through the google but man, nothing...nowhere... :tired:

I cannot run HOMAM5 and/or any of the expansion on my computer...

I have Vista x64 and new ATI Radeon 4870 with latest drivers.

My problem is that whenever I try playing the game my textures go like washed out and they get lowered to the utter minimum...

It looks like this (the picture at the top):

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc& ... 1011009506

Does anyone know what to do with that please?

Thanks a lot!

Did you install DirectX 9 from the DVD?

I think it can be, but it can be something else as well. Nevertheless it's important to install it, since H5 uses it.

You see, Microsoft were stupid enough to not include DirectX 9 capabilities in DirectX 10, which makes some games that operate on DirectX 9 not work with DirectX 10. But don't worry, installing DirectX 9 won't downgrade or ruin DirectX 10 in any way :)

Hehe, yeah, I know it won't downgrade anything. :D :D

BUT I am stupid enough I did not realize DX10 does not include DX9 in it...I will check, maybe none of the games I installed recently had DX9 in its installation! I was reinstalling system quite recently...

Thanks!

Hmmm...this does not seem to be working...

I installed the DX9 from Tribes of the East installation and then I even tried the latest ones from microsoft.com, but nothing...still the same problem. For a while are textures working, then I e.g. go to buy some creatures and they are gone... :( When I change the texture quality to some different value, it works for a short while again, but then the textures are gone...The only settings that work is lowest texture quality, but it looks quite disgusting... :(

Well it was good to install DirectX 9 anyway. But still, I think you have insufficient memory (either RAM or Video RAM)

It's more than enough!

I have only 1 GB RAM and 128 MB Video memory :D and still works

Sorry I don't know what could be wrong... I'm out of ideas :(

This happens to me but goes away as soon as I click to a different screen. For example I'll go to the build screen and come back and the adventure map is ok.

It's more common on Nvidia cards, no one has found a solution yet.

I still think you can change settings in the .ini files to fix it but since I don't have the problem I can't really test changes myself.

Thanks a lot for help anyway! ;)

@PhoenixReborn, I tried it, but has no positive impact for me...

Yesterday I was messing little bit with the user.ini file, checking what each settings does and such and it worked ok for about half an hour...but I need more testing...if I find the solution, I'll report it here. :)

SOLUTION for washed out textures for Radeon 4870 (maybe all ATI cards or also NVidia) and Windows Vista x64:

Go to:

C:\Users\your_username\Documents\My Games\Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East\Profiles\your_HOMAMTotE_profile_name\

Open "user_a2.cfg" and check if you have all the settings same as I do below (except "setvar gfx_resolution = " - THERE YOU MUST PUT YOUR DESIRED RESOLUTION and window resolution, where can be anything). I strongly recommend you using all the other stuff below if you wanna have quite nice and acceptable graphics!

Be sure you DO NOT have Anti-Aliasing, Anisotropic Filtering, Trilinear Buffering and Vsync forced in your drivers!! It kinda overrides the game settings and it does not work then!

Download latest DX9 package and drivers for your graphics card!

Download this perfect mod to improve graphics (it works perfectly only with Anisotropic Filtering on):

viewtopic.php?t=8136&highlight=texture

MAKE A BACKUP OF "user_a2.cfg" BEFORE YOU CHANGE ANYTHING!

DO NOT CHANGE THE VIDEO SETTINGS INGAME AFTER YOU PUT THE STUFF BELOW IN YOUR "user_a2.cfg"! IT STOPS WORKING IF YOU DO SO...

The part of "user_a2.cfg" you should rewrite:

setvar gfx_16bit_mode = 0
setvar gfx_16bit_textures = 0
setvar gfx_anisotropic_filter = 16
setvar gfx_ban_lags = 0
setvar gfx_depth_tex_resolution = 1024
setvar gfx_dynamic_lights = 1
setvar gfx_effect_alpha_treshold = 0
setvar gfx_fix_ban_np2 = 0
setvar gfx_fix_nv_np2_hack = 0
setvar gfx_frame_transition = 1
setvar gfx_fsaa = 8
setvar gfx_fullscreen = 1
setvar gfx_gamma = 1
setvar gfx_hsr = 0
setvar gfx_lag = 1
setvar gfx_lm_calc = 0
setvar gfx_lm_quality = 1
setvar gfx_lod_switch_distance = 300
setvar gfx_mapshot = 0
setvar gfx_nonclipped_water = 0
setvar gfx_nopixelshaders = 0
setvar gfx_noshadows = 0
setvar gfx_particles = 1
setvar gfx_quality = 1
setvar gfx_register_resolution = 1
setvar gfx_resolution = 1680x1050
setvar gfx_shadows_quality = 0
setvar gfx_static_nooverwrite = 0
setvar gfx_texture_mip = 1
setvar gfx_transp_buffer_auto_grow = 0
setvar gfx_true_water_reflection = 0
setvar gfx_vsync = 1
setvar gfx_water_amplitude = 0.01
setvar gfx_water_frequence = 4000
setvar gfx_water_length = 5.13
setvar gfx_water_reflection = 1
setvar gfx_window_size = 1664x969

DO NOT BE AFRAID IF THE GAME STARTS WITH WASHED OUT TEXTURES, JUST START A NEW GAME AND IT WILL BE OK! I WAS PLAYING IT OVER 4 HOURS WITHOUT AN ERROR...ehm... :D :D

I hope it helps you, works wonders for me!! Finally!!

If someone else comes with better solution I am big ear though! ;)

Cheers,
