Harukaba Reviews Heroes V

Unread postby Angelspit » 14 Jun 2007, 16:02

Former Celestial Heavens contributor Erica Marceau (Harukaba was her pen name here) reviewed the Mac version of Heroes of Might and Magic V for <a href="/http://www.applelinks.com/index.php/mor ... lelinks</a>. While the final score is positive (four stars out of five), she warns the readers that the game might not appeal to everyone and expresses her concerns about the expansions that might not be ported to the Mac. According to her, Heroes V is the best game of the series for a newcomer to get started. Here is the bottomline:

<i>"Heroes of Might and Magic V is a fun game and a worthy addition to the series. For those who don't usually play turn-based strategy games, I can think of no better game to get them started on the genre, and those who do probably already have their copy by now. Until the v1.5 patch is released it's going to be a bit frustrating considering the stability issues, so it might be best to wait to get your copy until they're fixed. Once they are fixed, HoMMV will definitely be a worthy addition to anyone's gaming library."</i>

I'm curious, for those that have the mac version, are the map files the same? Can you use fan-made maps...or is there no editor?

Unless I am mistaken, the map format is the same. But Mac players can't play expansion maps obviously. As for the editior, I'm really not sure, sorry.

This review may be acceptable for casual gamers but for strategy gamers it's useless. A.I/skirmish play is a main point for those people and nothing in that area is mentioned.

Actually, she doesn't mention the A.I at ALL which is completely unacceptable!

and let's face it, what makes this a better entry point then say HII or HIII or HIV? I can't see how HV is the best game to get started on TBS ....

PhoenixReborn: the Mac version uses the same map files as the PC version, so yes, you can download, install and play third party maps. But obviously only the non-expansion maps work, and the editor isn't available for the Mac either.

So by that logic you should be slamming heroes 2 because they murdered the magic system and improved the graphic's resolution.

____

The majority of heroes 5 maps are for the original game, there are fewer for the expansion, and there are some that have been adjusted to work on both.

____

Anyway, the real reason it's a nice entry point is because you can walk into a store and pick it up. The only other heroes game you can find in store is heroes 4, which has the advantage of being cheaper.

They murdered dumb magic system and put the normal one. As for the resolution - it remained the same.

As for the review.. I think its bad, because it's perfunctory as for TBS game review. And I think for a TBS (or Heroes) beginner - H2 is the best choice, though it doesnt matter that much.

If you can look at the wolf from Heroes I and then the one for heroes II and tell me which one looks sharper I would like it. The cyclops is an even better example.

And now you're calling the heroes 1 magic system dumb. I wonder if you ever played it? I thought it worked well, made good use of the knowledge stat, and gave the advantage magically to the spell casting classes.

Edit: Maybe resolution is the wrong word, but I think you know what I mean now.

I vastly prefer V in every aspect as far as the system goes. All I do not like is how spellcaster damage is estimated for units.

Great you must love the scripting system in the editor, and kind of takes you back to DOS doesn't it. :|

I don't really care for those aspects of the game since I don't use them. What I meant was the skill system revision etc.

Methinks you're confusing what sHINIER means.

I will also admit the graphics have been a significant upgrade.

Only if you consider 3D an improvement...

Nope. I like the magic system too, even if it isn't perfect. And I consider the 3D upgrade a good thing. :)

I'm with you here, it did increase the level of the eye candy, but I would have preferred a better game with 2D graphics.

If you are being literal Heroes is supposed to be shiny. Out of all 4 games only Heroes 3 was muted and dull colored.

It's not fair to ask a developer to produce something from a previous time-frame. That's like asking why didn't they make Heroes 1 text based.

I want a better game with the same 3d graphics they have now, which are fine. The graphics don't need to be improved (or made worse) but the game does.
