Pin-Up of the East

Unread postby Angelspit » 07 Jun 2007, 15:59

Back in the 90s, video game and magazine publishers started using young women to promote their products. A one-page advertisement with a bikini babe holding a game controller or a racing game was quite common, to the point that I sometimes felt a little uncomfortable reading the latest issue of Computer Gaming World in public places. Publishers are a little more careful with their content today, but there are still marketers who think that Maxim and PC Gamer share the same readership. And Nival Interactive seems to agree with them. Thanks to evilp for the link.

I always loved that about fantasy art. Men tromp around in 300 pounds of steel armor, and women wear chain-mail bikinis (and a 4 foot sword).

The Dungeon's economy will take a heavy hit from the cheap orc working girls.

I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

Obviously females of any humanoid race will look sexually attractive to humans no matter how repugnant the males are.

Lol I love this dimorphism in fantasy. At least WoW doesn't do this - the female orcs look equally grotesque as the males - which makes sense. What's next? Hot undead chicks in thongs...?

You must mean Boris Vallejo's type of art. :)

Reading the comments again we seem to act strangely! Yes we ask for ugly models!

I do agree though that it doesn't seem to make sense. At least we didn't have such incidents with the dwarves :)

To be honest I don't really care about orcish models, male or female. Elves, dwarves and humans (and maybe Succubi) are the goodlooking races. They suffice. Perhaps the Shamaness has some Succubus blood. After all orcs in HoMM are not the same as typical fantasy ones.

20 years ago I would've loved a company to promote their games this way. Teen-age boys with raging hormones don't care about things like ethics. However, with 3 daughters of my own now....yeah, I'm very put off by this. This is Nival's way of saying "buy our game, it's got naked girls in it". Who cares if it's a good game or not. How about you worry more about the GAME than the PROMOTION of the game for a change. 'Nuff said.

I agree. Being a woman, I am disgusted by this cheap and shameless mode of advertising.

They should have done that for a female vampire. :)

The Academy althernate Djinn upgrade needs to be a hot female genie.

Haven could use some hot chicks too.

Not to mention scantily clad female heroes...

Look at all the advertisement on TV. Unless it is targeted at small children most of it is sexual in nature. So don't blame Nival too much. Sex sells.

Personally I really don't care about the ethics of it and even though I'm not turned on by pixels, I like the provocative styles the designers implement. But it is silly to have on the one hand ugly goons for orcish males and pretty orcish females on the other, unless it's for some reason such as that I mentioned. At least in the case of the elves (and even humans and dwarves) this dimorphism does not exist - both genders look good. People who don't like provocative content in games don't have to buy them.

I was thinking more along the lines of a zombie or a skeleton, to remain in line with such ridiculous logic. Vampires are always portrayed as sexual (e.g. Lucretia). Perhaps Nival can figure out a way to make its skeletons curvy.
