In southern Germany there is the Wolpertinger, a rabbit or hare with antlers and parts of duck and squirrel.

There is also the Tatzelwurm, which is kind of a lizard/dragon/worm/whatever.

Mongolian mythology attaches special respect to the wolves. Because they see wolves as their descendants or mentors.

Russians often have a witch in their fairy tales called baba yiaga. She is old, ugly and lame on one foot. She lives in a house with rooster legs.

Kalah wrote:Well, you could blame the Bible again, for making the snake the scapegoat of the fall of man... which could have to do with the fact that some of the gods squeezed out by the new belief preached by the old testament, were snake-gods.

What I think though, is that the snake was considered "the enemy" by lots of folks all over Europe, Asia and elsewhere, because it was dangerous. Look out for the snake, kids. They'll bite you and kill you. They're evil.
Actually, snakes are considered favorably by most people around the world mostly because of their beneficial effects rather than their danger.

This also might be cause why Bible made them scapegoats.

Riiiight.... which is why, I suppose, people tend to scream and run away or alternatively try to kill it when they see one... :)

Yeah, that's how we categorize humans: the cowards and the stupids.

Which is which? ;)

Well, we don't have many snakes in Norway. The only poisionous one we have is the viper (Vipera berus), and my defensive strategy as far as snakes are concerned has a lot to do with staying the hell away from them.

Over here there's nothing like dead snakes that have dried out in the sun. And it's just freaky how they still move after you chop them to pieces.

In the American Indian culture just about any animal has mystical possibilities. However, the white buffalo seems to be the most honored of the creatures. Other white creatures, the wolf, coyote, ect, all have a place of honor, but none quite as high as the white buffalo. Similar to this is the White Hind. A deer that supposedly has mystical abilities, and often leads unwary hunters astray. If you manage to kill it however, great power and fame is yours.
