He's the same methinks. He did train under a warlock and fled from him. Also nothing really suggests that the transformation is happening at the same time, his real face IS a skull and probably had been for decades that way.
It was his original promise and it worked pretty well. He gained a general and the gueen was so shocked that she was unfit to rule. Earlier he had to manipulate, from that point he could rule directly.

On the other hand.. Having a hero that can cast at any time during his units' turn might be fun, I kinda missed that. Especially since who started first and who second often decided a game, esp in light vs dark games.

So? That doesn't necessarily mean they understood 3DO's vision or the setting in its entirety. If you can't get into your predecessor's minds you are very likely to mess up and receive criticism for failing to continue the tradition that has already been set.
