6 and 7 only allowed two hired NPCs each, but you could have an infinite number of quest-related NPCs in the party at once otherwise (in MM7, rescuing the dwarves and working on the Wizard and Paladin promotion quests all at the same time gives you 9 NPCs to shuffle through). As I said above, it's because it's easy to miss. MM7 didn't require it at all (and The Pit doesn't even have an eligible fountain), and MM6 the central fountains are actually central . In MM8 even when you remember that it's explicitly required, you're playing "find the right fountain" hal...

The aging effects make more sense in the context of unnatural ageing. MM6 is rife with it (mostly as an excuse to seek out the Fountain of Youth before tracking down the four memory crystals), MM7 and 8 not so much. I know the NWC-era games had "die from old age" but that's not a thing fro...

It would be easier to verify if MM8 didn't do "dynamic donations" - the more extreme your reputation, the more the temple takes per donation

pretty much. You can cheat it by using the two way portal between New Sorpigal and the shrine of the gods in Dragonsand, but it's a pain in the ass since you can only take up to 10k gold from NWC at any given time.

Might I suggest checking your reputation score? MM6 has more extreme swings in reputation than 8 does, and reputation affects different things compared to 6 (I'm having the same "sell stuff for 1 gold" problem but my reputation is -90 and I don't have enough gold to quickly donate my way b...

I don't know for certain about other locations but Divine Intervention should still appear as part of the MM6 Obelisk Puzzle Reward. As for replication-ness, I believe but am not entirely certain that the DI book will still appear in its proper location in The Breeding Zone even if you opt to play D...

1) To my knowledge, the Necromancer class specifically is only promotable to Lich in Jadame (because that quest is specifically "Necromancer -> Lich" and not "Wizard -> Lich"), but Sorcerors from Enroth/Erathia can also promote to Liches by passing through the Erathian Wizard -> ...

That's kind of the opposite of what the OP is talking about - they're saying "an engine remake, but the player has to provide the copyrighted assets themselves" rather than "an all new game in the vein of the games"

The main examples for this scheme would be KeeperFX (for Dungeon Keeper) and the many, many source ports of Doom/Doom 2 (since the engine is GPL but the assets aren't, what OP describes is exactly what Doom source ports have to do).
