I never actually played IX, because I had no idea it came out or was even in development. I remember eagerly awaiting HOMMIV and then it came out, was a huge disappointment for me, and the next thing I heard was that 3DO went under -- I didn't hear about the HOMMIV expansions either. Then years late...
GOG added Might and Magic IX a couple of weeks ago, although it wasn't mentioned here, that gives them all the Might and Magic titles ever except for Warriors of Might and Magic, which I hear was awful, and its PS2 only sequel Shifters, which I hear was okay.
it's fine it's using the same engine. In the days of MM6-8 engines technologies were increasing so fast that the engine became dated. What would be important is that gameplay is changed enough to make it feel like a new game.
Etherlords 2 is just wonderful in my opinion and should appeal to Heroes fans who also like King's Bounty. Also, Disciples, Age of Wonder, Kohan, Seven Kingdoms, King Arthur, Tactics Ogre (not PC :-( ), Lords of Magic, Birthright, Hammer of the Gods, Fantasy Wars/Eleven Legacy. They are all classic ...

I'm fine with it being unfinished if the company continues to put hard work into it after it's out. A lot of Heroes V's end product was due to feedback from the initial release.
