Re: stuck in chapter To honor our fathers - one khan, one clan

I'm gearing up to finish my LP finally, and after taking so long off playing I'd forgotten a lot of basics so I'm doing the first two ToE campaigns on heroic as a test run + warm-up. This map is nasty on heroic (playing default version on steam as of May 2016), it took me three tries and by the 3rd ...

Hammers of Fate → Ylaya's Quest → Dragons

I lost track of the time on this one, and did not get the last 2 stat buildings or stack of black dragons on heroic. I built the town up to max though and had a ton of units (in retrospect it's as Maltz says, black drags not worth to build the dwelling here). So I had to defend that attack on heroic...

Hammers of Fate → Ylaya's Quest → The Break

Grail quests suggestion of raise dead, if you have it, is good. If you have good power you can pick up the undead troops and use only them in some otherwise tough battles and then replenish your losses at the end. I didn't bother though. I was pretty underbuilt for this one, only basic destruction a...

Hammers of Fate ¡÷ Ylaya's Quest ¡÷ The Spy

I killed all the secondary mobs and got all the huts, still no quest reward so I just went on without it. This map is pretty tough on heroic if you don't get something heavy-hitting early. However, if you do then you can get past the druid elders with fewer casualties and it's not as bad. Destructiv...

Wulfstan's Defiance - The Guerrillas

I went into this one on heroic with expert logistics, only advanced destructive magic, and stuff like defense/war machines. Needless to say, it was quite the ride. I failed the escort mission getting too grabby on neutrals along the way, and the town was completely impossible to take on weeks 3 or 4...

Whenever you have this kind of situation, keep in mind that while he might have taken your town, his troop types don't mesh well with yours if you curse the town. Even if he can recruit there though, no matter what you have more towns (you can skeleton transform non-conforming towns anyway). Just ki...

Playing through the campaigns, it's surprising how many maps can be won with "numbers", even on heroic and even ones traditionally considered very difficult, if you attack quickly and/or outmaneuver the opponent. There are some exceptions of course, but in a majority of cases you can just ...

IMO this map is a cakewalk compared to necro 5, warlock 3, and sylvan 2 :D.

Lots of interesting stuff here, my take so far: Necro: Misunderstood in HOMM V, especially after dark energy. Necro creeps very fast (mark of necro + raise dead), and can build up silly numbers with high necro skill + skeleton transformer (if applicable). Their magic school bias (Dark, Summoning) gi...

Difficulty is a big factor. Beat a campaign on heroic and watch those black dragon scores soar.

I suspect hero level and town buildup as factors also.

Summoning Magic can beat almost anything if your hero has enough Power/Knowledge and meat shields. Try Summon Phoenix, and summoning Fire Elementals. Also, if you have enough magic and magic stats on a hero, the difficulty ratings of battles mean nothing in most cases. I've won battles I was hopele...

You can capture 3 cities by the end of week one on heroic, so that's probably more "efficient" lol. Also note that heroes do NOT desert off anybody except Agrael, so you CAN keep most of your elf troops if you cap a tavern ASAP. You don't need war machines to accomplish it, they're just ni...

Elf troops only desert from Agrael. Just buy another hero ASAP and dump the stack on that hero at the end of each turn so you don't lose them. Once you've built up the inferno town you can just use those troops, but the map is effectively won if you take the first 3 elf towns anyway since your objec...

These kinds of things are a judgment call. For example, a LOT of maps are decisively easier if you've ever played them before. Take campaign 2 mission 3 for example. If you've never played it before, you'll probably just take the first Sylvan town you see, and while it's possible to win even on hero...

Any pure destructive magic caster can be nasty if you mentor them. Also, Deleb's ballista is some nasty stuff even if she can gate nothing lol. The knight who gets movement/level is also really good on larger maps. Basically, any hero with a very powerful special and good starting skills can be a re...

In preparation for an upcoming let's play of this game, I've been going through the campaigns on heroic for practice. I beat this level recently on heroic. The only really noteworthy/important skill I had on Agrael at this point was war machines with ballista + first aid tent. I of course also had d...

Skills and magic definitely matter. For example you can kill 450 zombies with 1 reasonably high initiative unit and a ballista, just running back and forth. You can crush hordes of shooters in campaigns with 1-2 level 6 troops and a first aid tent + ballista. For magic heroes, destructive school + m...
