I guess that these slowdowns may be due to the improved pathing algorithm added by Rodril. If I'm not wrong, there should be a setting to turn it off if this problem makes some areas impossible to play.

I'm not sure, but it may be that the game uses a variant of LithTech engine, MM9 used the Talon version.

I think it may be useful when NPC or quests give generic directions for a place, like "go west of the river", etc... I would prefer it next to the minimap as in MM6.
