For many time I thought that imps are weak, but they have a big card with the mana stealing. Once my Angles could resurrect 4 times, because of the magic amplifier + mana flare + blinded enemy hero + imps. They can be used with the devils in same manner...

sprites and bandits

Speed kills and these two do the job they also work very well in their particular factions. Both couple well with their preferred level two creatures (Medussa and Elf) and also have high speed that works at all times on the adventure map

Sprites no retal and flight ability elt you use them as blockers and to jet across the battlefield to take on shooters. They are also fast so they can move first or last a lot of times.

Bandits again are good as blockers and can run across a battlefield pretty quickly. Their added stealth is what makes them the best overall scout in the game. It's amazing how much faster a Chaos hero can build and clear his homeland when the beginning mines and resources are guarded by level one creatures.

I think that both the bandit and sprites speed ability is what makes them the most attractive long after other level one's have become "obsolete"

Tough choice, but I went with the Crossbowmen. Really useful early game, and with long range, they can do full damage round one.

PS: If it was an option, I would almost pick the Zombies.
I maintain nonetheless that yin-yang dualism can be overcome. With sufficient enlightenment we can give substance to any distinction: mind without body, north without south, pleasure without pain. Remember, enlightenment is a function of willpower, not of physical strength.

I voted Crossbowman. Perhaps its my fetish for ranged units speaking, but I find them to be the most useful all game. Other units such as thieves and skeletons, I'll eventually replace, but the X Bowman mow down stacks all game for me.

The skeleton is overall one of the best low level units in Heroes IV.
It has nice stats, can give and take damage and last but certainly not least,
the unit's bonus makes them less attractive target for enemy ranged units.

Don't worry if things are going badly today. They will be much worse tomorrow.
