I'm going with the Warlocks in this one. They were easy to play with a very nice mix of creatures.

Don't worry about balance because there wasn't much if the game lasted more than a couple of weeks :)

Warlock was the most powerful faction in H1, but I'm going with my favourite: Barbarian.

Voted for the all-girl alignment of Sorceress. It's the H1 equivalent of the Nature-Rampart alignment in H3 & the Nature-Preserve alignment in H4. Besides, it's the most beautiful town in H1. :)

BTW: Even though my favorite faction is Warlock [with Flying Barneys] I do have to admit that my favorite hero leading the army was a Barbarian!!

Noone voted for Knights. And I would be surprised if anyone will.

Yeah. Warlocks for this one. Really should be no surprise here.

Voted for Warlocks, i absolutely love everything about this castle, the gloomy atmosphere, eerie music, the heroes (Sandro!) and creatures of course...

Actually there's something very old-fashioned and cheesy about this castle that i find quite endearing  ...

I agree. The Castle / Knight faction is my second favorite from HoMM1. Ditto that for HoMM2. I esp. love the Paladins / Crusaders and their cape :)

But I find Castle/Knights frustrating. For example you encounter an enemy hero who retreats after a Lightning Bolt on the Paladins, and you remain with 3 Paladins less.

I voted for Barbarians but I like Sorceress just as much. I think Sorceress is the easiest faction to play due to the shooters + speed combo, whereas Knight is the most difficult one with an all walker army and a weak/slow shooter.

Why not? It's favourite, not best/most powerful.

But people tend to play more with the strongest, because of an easy win, an so it becomes favorit.

Easiest win does not always equal most enjoyable play. At least that's how I see it.

To some it does, to some it don`t.

Knights for me. They are my favorites in H2 also. As a concept i always liked them, you know, mere humans trying to fight against hordes of goblins, dragons, wizards and other bizzare creatures. They never were same to me after inclusion of angels, griffins and to lesser extent- monks. So yeah, classical knights for the win!

Of course as far as gameplay goes... haven`t played much with them in mp games :D

I haven't said easiest, only easy. I didn't mentioned enjoyment. Anyway if I play H1, I sometimes like the struggle with Castle, but mostly would play Stronghold or Nature, for a challenge with fair chance or Dungeon for safetiness.

H1! When you could shield the Centaur from hand to hand combat with a Griffin or Hydra. And no offense to Hodge but I think that the Purple Dragon tower was absolutely beautiful.

Gargoyle
Minotaur
Griffin
Hydra
Centaur

I always started Gargoyle, blank, blank, Griffin, Centaur and attacked everyone!

Voted Knight. Normally I would have chosen Warlock, since I'm a huge fan of hydras, but this game is so ridiculously unbalanced that choosing Warlock simply strikes at my conscience.
