Town Portal

Unread postby Overman » 09 Jul 2007, 12:24

I love the HOMM III series, but it seems once I get the Town Portal spell (along with Adv Wisdom/Adv Earth magic), my hero is practically invincible.

I can simply load him up with all my available troops, and teleport around the map, eliminating the AI generals easily.

Anyone else notice this?

Same with the 'Fly' spell. Once Ive got it, its game over.

Try "gosolo" to training your hero. Or be going without Earth Magic at all. Or change map, my all time favourite is "Realm of Chaos". AI can also making daring moves with TP there.

I like quick wins on XL maps. For me, TP is a must. And I do like Fly and DD as well. On an XL map they are a necessity if you are on the move. Look at it this way, the AI uses them, why not you?

You can disable the Town Portal, Fly & Dimension Door Spells by using the Map Editor (except in the Campaigns).

@Overman: You could try playing at Impossible. ;)

At that difficulty, not having Town Portal and/or Fly = death. :)

I usually play on Expert.

Once in a while Ill try 'Impossible', but the first few moves are of crucial importance.

Indeed!

I beat three Impossible AI's once...but that was because of how the random map placed them on the map.

I can beat two of them consistently...I play with the Rampart myself...I love Wood Elves! :D

I really dont have a preference for town types. I think they are all pretty balanced...except for the Stronghold and Fortress...which are good early game bases.

If had to choose, Id probably pick Tower or Dungeon.

@darknessfood: True. But Titans are a pain to get...so many gems...:S

@Overman: I see...I like to think they're balanced as well. :)

Don't remind me about the Roc/Wyvern week 2 rush...:tongue:

Towers are hard to play early...hefty resource costs slow you down.
I wouldn't mind playing Dungeon though...:)

You did mean the week 1 rush, right? :|
wyverns or rocs in week 2 isn't really a rush... by the end of the week, you should have behemoths/hydras on most random maps.

That depends on the fund you started with (which means the difficulty of the map overall).

If you started with 10,000, then rushing roc/wyvern means no improvement for your town, which means a poor gambit in the longshot. Not to mention wether you really need them in the first place.

If you started in maps with a number of gold around, then there's no problem with whatever town you're started anyway.

I do agree with you. I'm usually building Capitol before starting the creature building (Random XL with underground, Impossible difficulty). But when the map is very rich on loose resources, I sometimes do the creature rushing.

My comment was aimed at, that I don't consider building Wyverns in week 2 to be a rush ... but more like standard building.

@winterfate: That's the only reason NOT to pick the Tower :P. They cost a lot but once there you have quite some firepower!

@Paulus1: Granted, but it's a lot harder to rush with 2 Wyverns/Rocs than with 6. :)

If your opponent gets lucky with the initial heroes...he could have over 100 Troglodytes/Gremlins...and all of them because of initial troops. :S

@darknessfood: True. But it could be argued that every race is like that in this game...:tongue:
